[edit] Synopsis

While International Rescue tackles a fire in England, an excited young boy stows away onboard the unguarded Thunderbird 2. Unwittingly flown back to base by the Tracy brothers, can a security leak be avoided while Jeff tries to think up a solution to the problem?

[edit] Plot

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

At night, a fire is blazing at a mine in England. While the International Rescue Fire Truck moves in to assist the authorities, Morrison puts his son, Chip, to bed in their home and leaves to help with the fire, explaining that International Rescue is about to lift a man out of a shaft. Once his father is gone, Chip moves to the window and gazes intently at the open Pod 1 door of Thunderbird 2, abandoned with Thunderbird 1 in a nearby field.

After the rescue is successfully completed, Scott returns to Tracy Island in Thunderbird 1. Thunderbird 2 is delayed by a technical fault, but as Virgil and Alan return to the hangar, instruments warn Jeff that there is a possible saboteur onboard. Ordering Virgil and Alan to remain on the control deck, Jeff hurries down to the hangar with Scott and Gordon. Training guns on Thunderbird 2, Jeff commands Virgil to open the Pod 1 door, only for the "saboteur" to reveal himself as Chip Morrison.

Furious that Thunderbird craft were left unguarded, Jeff holds an urgent meeting with Scott, Alan and Gordon, but none of them can think of a solution to return Chip to his home yet prevent him from divulging International Rescue's secrets. Meanwhile, Virgil is keeping an eye on Chip in the Thunderbird 2 hangar. Though initially wary not to answer the boy’s eager questions, Virgil’s resistance crumbles when Chip declares that he would rather pilot Thunderbird 1. Virgil recounts the story of how he helped to save Eddie Houseman ("End of the Road") to prove Thunderbird 2’s worth in rescue operations.

After Virgil is summoned by Jeff, Chip falls into the care of Alan. In the Thunderbird 3 launch bay, Alan indignantly recalls the rescue of the Sun Probe ("Sun Probe") when Chip reckons that, being an astronaut, he does not see as much action as his brothers. Scott arrives and tells Alan that Jeff wants to see him.

Dubious that Alan gave nothing away, Jeff is confident that Scott, his eldest son, will keep his mouth shut. Unknown to him, however, Chip is now sitting in the Thunderbird 1 cockpit while Scott describes how International Rescue saved the Fireflash’s maiden flight from disaster ("Trapped in the Sky"). Realising his mistake, Scott bans Chip from viewing Thunderbird 4. Before long, however, Chip is in the submersible’s pilot seat and manages to coax Gordon into telling the story of the recovery of the Martian Space Probe ("Day of Disaster").

Dreading what Jeff will think of their disclosures, and the fact that Chip is now missing, Scott, Virgil and Alan are on the verge of panic. Gordon, however, locates the boy - being lectured on the role of coordinating operations by none other than Jeff Tracy.

Desperate to remove the boy from Tracy Island while maintaining security, Jeff comes up with a solution. Chip, exhausted after having no rest, is allowed to fall asleep. He is then transferred to Thunderbird 2, flown back to England, and placed in his real bed. Morrison returns home from the fire just as Chip wakes up to believe that his experiences on Tracy Island were a dream.

[edit] Goofs

  • When Thunderbird 2 returns to Tracy Island, smoke can be seen flowing backwards inside the hangar (footage from the regular Thunderbird 2 launch sequence has simply been reversed).
  • When Chip is forced at gunpoint to show himself inside Thunderbird 2’s pod, the "1" numeral on the puppet-sized door in the close-up shots does not match the numeral on the long-shot model.

[edit] Notes

  • Due to this episode’s extensive use of flashback footage, it features just 17 minutes of new material.
  • The International Rescue Fire Truck is a revamp of the Gray & Houseman explosives tractor seen in "End of the Road".
  • The Chip Morrison puppet also stars as Bob Williams in "Cry Wolf".
  • The Thunderbird 2 return sequence is also seen in "Ricochet".
