Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food (Traditional Chinese: 衞生福利及食物局局長) is a ministerial position in the Hong Kong Government, and heads the Health, Welfare and Food Bureau (HWFB). The position is politically appointed, and its term expires when the Chief Executive leaves office. The secretary is also a member of the Executive Council (ExCo). The current office holder is Dr York Chow.

Before the introduction of the Principal Official Accountability System (POAS) in July 2002, this was a civil service position, and the office holder was not a member of the ExCo. Following the introduction of POAS the responsibility of food and environmental hygiene was transferred from the now abolished position Secretary for the Environment and Food, and the title was renamed from Secretary for Health and Welfare to its present name.
