"Secret of The Dragon Balls" was the first episode of Dragon Ball. It introduces Goku, Bulma, Pilaf, Shu and Mai. It was known as "Secret of the Dragon Balls" in both the Funimation and Ocean Group dubs. It is unknown what it was called in the Harmony Dub. It is thought to have been called "The Quest For The Dragon Balls" in the Blue Water Dub.

This episode first appeared on Japanese television on February 26th, 1986. It was titled "Son Goku and Buruma". The cast was:

In the late 1980s, Dragon Ball was brought to the US via the Harmony Gold Dub. It is a very unpopular dub with names changes of the main characters. For instance, Goku was Zero. This episodes's title in this dub is unknown, and so is the cast.

In 1995, Ocean Group brought the first 13 episodes of Dragon Ball to North America. They named this episode "The Secret of the Dragon Balls". The cast was:

The most popular dub of Dragon Ball in English and the only one successful (they did every movie, episode, and video game of Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT), this version came out in 2001. For the first thirteen episode, Funimation stuck with the names the Ocean Group had given it. The name of this episode was, "Secret of the Dragon Balls". The cast was:

While the Funimation Dub was for the US, the Blue Water Dub version was for Canada and Britain. Although many Americans think that this is also unpopular and unsuccessful like Ocean and Harmony Dub, but the truth is this is very popular in the UK and Canada. Blue Water dub is also called, the British Twin to Funimation. In their dub, Quest for the Dragon Balls was used as the title for this episode. The cast is:

Bulma's search for six more Dragon Balls leads her to a remote valley and to Goku, who is in possession of one of the balls. Their relationship gets off to a rocky start, but after Goku saves Bulma's life, the two join forces in search of the remaining five Dragon Balls. They had better take care, for an evil force also seeks the Dragon Balls - Emperor Pilaf!

Goku is surviving in the forest after the death of his grandfather Gohan. The only thing he has to remind him of his grandfather is the 4 star dragonball and his power pole. Then we see Bulma in search of Goku's dragonball and the other 4. As Bulma gets closer to Goku's house Goku notices his 4 star dragonball is glowing and he thinks it's actually his grandfather. After Goku has gone fishing he sees Bulma's car heading towards him, it then hits him. He thinks Bulma's car is a monster and then demolishes it. Bulma starts shooting him and she is confused that he is still alive. Bulma gets out of the car and Goku starts respecting her bacause he has never seen a girl before. Goku takes Bulma back to his house and Bulma notices Goku is the one who has the dragonball. She takes it off the pillow and Goku wants it back because he thinks Bulma is taking his grandfather. Bulma shows him the other 2 dragonballs she already has and explains to him that when all 7 dragonballs are gathered that a dragon will appear and let them have 1 wish. Bulma explains that she wants a boyfriend for the wish but Goku doesn't want to hand the dragonball over. Bulma says if he gives it to her she will let him have a peek but Goku still doesn't want to give it to her. Bulma says if he comes with her and searches for the dragonballs with her that he can have the dragonball back after the wish. The real reason Bulma wants Goku to come along with her is to use him for a bodyguard after she saw his incredible power when he destroyed her car. She also knew that Goku wouldn't really get the dragonball back after the wish was made because they fly away once a wish has been granted and can't be found for another year. Goku asked Bulma how they are going to find the other dragonballs, she then pulls out her dragon radar and tells him that the little dots on the screen are the dragonballs and that is where they have to search for them. Bulma pulls out a capsule and throws it in the air and a motorcycle appears. Goku starts thinking she is a witch. They both start going on the motorcycle in search of the next dragonball. Bulma gets off the bike, hopping from leg to leg, and says she urgently needs to pee. Goku hears her screaming for help and runs over to her to find her in the hands of a Terradactyl like bird that wants to eat her. The Terradactyl flies off with Bulma but Goku doesn't know how to save her. He ends up getting on her motorcycle to chase after him and rides up on a rise on a hill that gets him up to the level of the Terradactyl-like bird making Goku airborne. Goku pulls out his power-pole and swings it on the Terrdactyl's head but now both Goku and Bulma are falling down between 2 mountains. Goku throws his power pole at Bulma and it lands in the side of the cliff with Bulma hanging on to it. Goku landed safely on top of the other cliff. Bulma says she is having a crisis and you can see drips coming out from between her legs.
