Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The affair lasts a matter of ten days, ending when Miranda finds Brendan in her flat having let himself in, and he admits to reading her diary.

A month later she finds that he is dating her sister Kerry, but it becomes obvious he is playing a psychological game with her. He attempts to remain in Miranda's life by any means possible, building relationships with the people closest to her.

Miranda's concerns about Brendan grow when her manic depressive brother suddenly commits suicide after spending time with him. With Brendan having convinced everyone that Miranda was partly to blame for her brother's death, Brendan continues to plan his wedding to Miranda's sister Kerry, only to ditch her on the day of their wedding and marry Miranda's best friend, Laura.

Shortly after her wedding to Brendan, Miranda finds Laura's corpse in her bath tub, and Brendan is suspected of killing her but a conviction isn't made. The final straw is Brendan dumping Laura's personal things, like passport and photos.

Miranda becomes slightly obsessed with proving Brendan's guilt, she contacts his sister who shunned him and no longer considers him a brother. Miranda finally tracks him down, he is now living in a posh apartment with a glamorous nurse called Naomi.

Miranda breaks into the apartment and gives Naomi her number before being thrown out by Brendan. Brendan convinces the court that it is in fact Miranda who is stalking him and has an injuncton placed against her that forbids her anywhere near him. Brendan sets a trap and forces Naomi to ring Miranda and invite her to the apartment. Miranda, believing that Naomi is in trouble, arrives just as Brendan has called the police. Naomi quickly phones her and tells her about the trap.

They hatch a plan to convict Brendan. Miranda sells her flat and on her final night there Brendan arrives, she drugs him and then pours her blood all over the bathroom (Naomi is a nurse so she extracted Miranda's blood beforehand) and pours some in the bath, leaving some gaffer tape in the bathroom and other incriminating evidence. Now with the money she earned from selling the flat, she poses as Laura (she has her passport) and runs off to Australia to Naomi's parents.

Brendan is charged with the murder of Miranda and sent to prison, Miranda's family are distraught but at Christmas they receive a card from Naomi, an invitation and three airline tickets for them to stay with her in Australia.

In the airline terminal, the three meet up with Naomi who points in the direction of the door, and Miranda enters in a hat shading her face and large sun-glasses.
