The Second Austrian Republic was founded in 1945 with the re-establishment of Austrian independence in the aftermath of World War II.
The First Republic is considered to have come to an end either in 1938, with Germany's annexation of the country (the Anschluss), or with the establishment of an Austro-fascist dictatorship in 1934.
Historic cornerstones shaping the nature of the Second Republic were the Austrian State Treaty of May 15, 1955 and the country's Declaration of Neutrality on October 26 of the same year.
