[edit] Circulating Coin Sets

I am currently providing images of circulating coin sets of the world to About.com Some of them can be seen at http://coins.about.com/od/worldcoins/ig/World-Coins-Gallery-Index/index.htm I will be happy to contribute these images to Wikipedia as well. I have previously granted Wikipedia full open use access to my coin images at worldcoingallery.com Let me know if you are interested! 134.67.6.11 12:20, 2 October 2006 (UTC) don@worldcoingallery.com

Thank you for the invitation, I think they would make a great contribution. There is legal mumbo-jumbo in your email box. Thnx again. Joe I 18:23, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re:Portal

Thanks for the offer. I need some help with the topics and categories section of the page. I'm not that familiar with all material relating to business, so any help there would be appreciated. I think I got a handle on everything else though. --Nishkid64 19:26, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Thanks for the barnstar! The gold color looks really nice. By the way, I had some comments left at the project talk page about the images file on Commons. --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 22:46, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Portal:Military of the United States

Ah, it's quite nice! Can I talk about how much I like the click-for-new-content setup? ;-)

A few (fairly trivial) points that ought to be looked at, though:

  • The image credits should be (somehow) written out, rather than being simple numbered external links.
  • I'm a bit surprised at both the small number of entries in the "Topics" box and the fairly ectlectic selection. Is there something I'm missing here, or were some of them chosen almost at random?
  • The font shrinking is overkill, in many places.
  • It's a bit surprising to see a portal with no "Things you can do" box, and not even a WikiProject link.

Kirill Lokshin 05:11, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

As far as the font shrinking goes, the "Topics" and "Resources" boxes have font that goes through several levels of shrinking. Even one isn't always a good idea; multiple ones just make the thing undreadable. ;-) Kirill Lokshin 22:10, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Challenge coin association

Hey, I noticed you rating a few articles, thnx. Do you remember why Challenge coin association was deleted? Joe I 02:22, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

Administrator User:Sarah Ewart said that I didn't assert the importance of the subject. In the future, when I have the energy to invest in the article, I will make it look like similar Numismatic Associations found on here, and their shouldn't be any problems. --JAYMEDINC 02:50, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

Ok, I was wondering cause it should be on here, we have plenty of other assosiations. Such as: American Numismatic Association, Canadian Numismatic Association, and American Vecturist Association, you can base the article to look like those. If you have any other problems when you do create it, please come to me or Wikipedia:WikiProject Numismatics and let us know.  :) Joe I 02:57, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

Thank you. Yes, I would like some help/advice when creating the article. I fear that when I write about CCA, it comes off as an advertisement or something like that. --JAYMEDINC 18:41, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

Well, I had some time today so I created the article again. I used the based it on the other numismatic associations, so I am convinced there will be no problems this time. Please feel free to give it a look. --JAYMEDINC 04:38, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] "Randomized" portal components

I see that you're a portal guy now. The pseudo random component is a good idea, and I'd like to take a step further. So instead of

{{/box-header|''Selected pictures''|Portal:Military of the United States/Selected picture/{{#ifexpr:({{CURRENTTIMESTAMP}} mod 22) >= 0 | {{#expr:({{CURRENTTIMESTAMP}} mod 22) + 1}} | {{#expr:-({{CURRENTTIMESTAMP}} mod 22) + 1}} }}|}} {{Portal:Military of the United States/Selected picture/{{#ifexpr:({{CURRENTTIMESTAMP}} mod 22) >= 0 | {{#expr:({{CURRENTTIMESTAMP}} mod 22) + 1}} | {{#expr:-({{CURRENTTIMESTAMP}} mod 22) + 1}} }}}} {{/box-footer|[[Portal:Military of the United States/Selected picture|More pictures...]]}}

it would be replaced something like with

 {{aNewTemplate|PortalRoot|ComponentSubpage|ComponentHeader|maxNumberOfInstances}}

But before being bold, I'd like to ask you if you have seen anything like this or any talk about that. I just want to avoid duplication of effort or having two or more competing templates that do the same thing. --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 04:59, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

No, it's news to me. Might wanna check someplace like Wikipedia:Portal or Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals, to be sure. I'm no template man tho, I just use what I've seen on other portals. I got the rotation bit from Portal:War. If that can be done tho, it seems so much simpler. Joe I 05:05, 7 October 2006 (UTC)
Done with Portal:Military of the United States, Portal:Numismatics, Portal:War, and Portal:Texas! --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 12:28, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
Whoa! So we don't even need the box headers now? That's great! Joe I 14:50, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
Oh, nevermind, I see them now. :) Great work. Joe I 14:56, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

You deserve it! Btw, I noticed the table of content on your user page. I'm not sure if it's deliberate. If you don't want it, you can add __NOTOC__ anywhere in the page and the TOC will disappear. --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 11:17, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
The last AC meeting (full log)
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

[edit] Portal:Military of the United States tabs

Hi, Searchme. If you're interested, I could customize the tabs at the portal so they match the color scheme and are flush right. Regards, Rfrisbietalk 18:51, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

Yes! I was gonna ask someone, but decided not to. I know I want the color to match, we'll see how the flushing looks. Thanks. :) Joe I 20:53, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
Cool. The typical set-up is to have the "current" tab white or some light matching hue, with the "other" tabs a mid-range matching hue. I'll set them up with parameters so you can play with them. Also, if you anticipate more tabs eventually, I can made a "middle" tab. Let me know if you have anything particular in mind and I'll start them off that way. Rfrisbietalk 21:33, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
Definatly set up for more tabs. I think I'm gonna add another real soon for a category tree. As far as the colors, try "khaki" as the light and "darkolivegreen" as the other. If I'll be able to change them, I'll see how that works and go from there. Joe I 21:38, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
Okay, another question. If you're going to be adding tabs, do you want the "page-width" tabs like at Wikipedia:Introduction or "text-width" tabs like at Wikipedia:Tutorial? Either style can be a single line high. Rfrisbietalk 21:45, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
I like the page-width better. Looks more uniform. Joe I 21:49, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
There you go. See Portal:Military of the United States/Header and Portal:Military of the United States/Things you can do tab/Header. The two green shades on the portal were too dark IMHO for a tab, so I went with a lighter shade of olivedrab (H80 S40 V75 - #A6BF73). You can see realted shades at User:Rfrisbie/Palettes/HSV and User:Rfrisbie/Palettes/Headers for Hue: 80. The colors use parameters, so you can try something else if you want. Rfrisbietalk 01:37, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] External Links from 67.23.165.237

Hey Joe, I'm not quite sure what to do with this. This anon user was putting quite a few external links on numismatic articles. I followed the links and the pages had only one paragraph of content that for the most part was already in the article so I reverted them.

He left a message for me that he added pictures, well all of the pictures are taken from coinfacts and no credit given, so I reverted again. He now claims that he will put the credits and has resumed adding links to pages with little content and "borrowed" pictures.

Another thing that bothers me about this is the entire site is driven by Zen Cart, which is 100% designed for ecommerce. Makes me wonder if the intention is to get all the links before the ecommerce, then filter in the sale products and hope no one notices.

Your thoughts on this? Bobby 19:31, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Irish punt

There's a discussion going on as to whether we should use the name punt or pound for this currency. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the matter.

[edit] Category tree

Hi, is there some documentation anywhere on <categorytree>? I couldn't find any. I can see some uses of it here and there if I can made it start out compressed, like the subcategories on a category page. Rfrisbietalk 20:44, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

I don't know of any. I took it off of Portal:Aviation. First time I remember seeing it. Joe I 09:30, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks anyway. I'll keep looking. Rfrisbietalk 15:03, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] I would greatly appreciate if you could weigh into an issue

Hi Joe I, i see you have written about a user and an article I am currently having a small issue with and I was hopeing if you could take a quick look and let me know if you think I am handling this correctly, or am I totally off base.

This page Advanced Currency Markets and ACM Forex were both writen by the user Acmforex

These pages seem to have multiple problems. They are refering to the exact same company and they seem to be written as an advertisement. I tried to delete what I felt were misleading points in the article and I deleted one of the duplicate articles and had it redirecting to the first.

This lead to the user, Acmforex, to write angry messages on my userpage Drewwiki, and the reversion of all my edits.

Because almost no one visits these sights I feel somewhat alone taking on what I suspect is a company employee, i can't tell you what your outside perspective would mean.

Thanks in advance

--DrewWiki 10:02, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

I also greatly appreciate
Dear Joe, Drewwiki was wrong. May be in their actual form, Advanced Currency Markets and ACM Forex are just a start and they will grow. But this is not an Advertising. Advanced Currency Markets does not need in anyway to advertise on Wikipedia, and never thing wikipedia is an adverstising site. But if you go to google for exemple, and search "acm forex", you'll obtain 346 000 entries. If you look at the advertising keywords part, you'll see every FOREX market maker use this expression. In facts, the expression ACM Forex is a result of the Advanced Currency Markets activty because of being a pioneer in giving online access to the forex. Now, ACM forex became an expression in FOREX, this is not a mark and wikipedia is the best way to explain it. Just read ACM Forex article, and read Advanced Currency Markets. Yes they are linked, but they are not the same.
Please remember to sign you comments, to do that it is 4~ in a row --DrewWiki 16:05, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Portal:European Union

Okay, there's a start. I made the "curent" tabs white to have some contrast. Rfrisbietalk 17:26, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Now it's #F9F9FF to match the box backgrounds. Rfrisbietalk 17:43, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

I just did a check on column image sizes. In order to fit correctly at 800X600 resolution, the left column images should be no larger than 300px, the right no larger than 200px, and the page box padding has to be reduced a bit. This sucks, IMHO, for higher resolutions, but it can be a deal breaker for featured portal status. Rfrisbietalk 05:42, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

Where did you see this requirement for FPs? I don't recall ever seeing it. Joe I 05:44, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
In my preps for nominations, e.g., Portal talk:Cats, Portal talk:Dogs, & Portal talk:Philosophy of science. I expect the next round of updates to the criteria & guidelines will spell this out somehow. In the meantime, I doubt a nomination would pass with a "broken" display at 800X600. Rfrisbietalk 05:53, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
Ok, that sucks. If you can fix the padding I'll change the pics to 300. Thanks for the catch. Joe I 05:57, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

EU "Content" page: Just curious, do you plan on deleting the sections that still show up on the front page? I expect it won't fly on FP review to have them on two pages, since they're identical or quite similar. Rfrisbietalk 03:18, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

I hadn't planned on it, no. Personally I like looking at one main page better, but have used the tabs to group info together for anyone who may find it easier. If it comes up as a problem in FPC, I'll fight for it under the fact that having everything on one main page is easier, but tabs give some consolidation. If change needs to be made for it to pass, so be it. Why, did you have plans for the room? Joe I 04:06, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
No, just looking ahead. I got dinged for duplications at Science and I expect you would too under the current layout. The only "new" section I see on the content page is the infobox. To me, the best place for the other boxes is on the main page. The infobox "statistics" alone make that page a bit thin. Right now, the third page is a bit iffy to me. Rfrisbietalk 04:22, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
It's got a lot more than Portal:Military of the United States categories tab, which is just a tree version of what is on the main page. I think it should stay the same and just play it by ear. Joe I 04:25, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
That's fine by me. Rfrisbietalk 05:06, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for adding the gallery of Japanese and Kazakh paper money to the nav box. In fact, I'd like to hide these galleries until there are more mature examples. User:Chochopk/Currency article status would include all galleries that I split off.

After careful consideration, I'd like to make an arbitrary threshold - a gellery must have 3 or more pictures. That means, the gallery of Japanese banknotes will be deleted. What do you think? --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 20:36, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Pesos and Pieces of Eight

The discussion page on the peso article [[1]] contains this:

"The Peso did not exist in Mexico until 1864, long after the US dollar was created. It was not a model for the US dollar. The dollar was modeled loosely after the Spanish 8 reales coin. The US dollar coin was not popular as international coinage since the Spanish 8 reales was both of finer silver .903 compared to the early 19th century US standard of .892 and weighed more, 27.07 grams compared to the US weight of 26.96 grams. The US later created the "Trade Dollar" for international transactions. It was equal to a Spanish 8 reales coin and only circulated outside the US."

Coinman62 17:32, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

___

Joe, I performed some historic research today and made some changes to both the "peso" article as well as the "Spanish dollar" article, which I hope will clarify these issues. You might want to take a look and see if you agree with the revisions. Coinman62 19:27, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

There's a link on the page to submit sites if you want to get any in there (10 at time possible). Could be a very good tool in a few weeks when a lot of sites are added. I didn't know where else to post it, since there's ads on the results page, I don't know if some people would get upset. [edit] Deletion of an article I wrote

Hi Joe,

I'd appreciate it if you could help me figure something out.

An article I wrote about fixya (the company) was deleted. I fail to see why this was done as I see so many other websites which have their own articles, for instance miniclip. I didn't write any promotional stuff, just information about the company.

Can you help me understand? Can I appeal? I've noticed that the person who deleted rarely answer to comments in his page.

Thanks. Yaniv.bl

[edit] Fixya speedy delete

Policy on speedy delete is explained here WP:CSD. In general it is not to do with the subject as much to do with the article. If you try to re-write the article so that it makes appropriate statements of notability etc then it would qualify for a slower and more considered process. Existence of other articles which may also merit deletion is not relevant to the decision process: any article could potentially be tested against guidelines and deleted. New articles are more likely to be checked. Hope this helps. --BozMo talk 09:57, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

I have put the deleted article here for you User:Yaniv.bl/fixya. The person who tagged this for deletion entered a code of G11 meaning "Blatant advertising. Pages which exclusively promote a company, product, group, service or person and which would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Note that simply having a company, product, group, service or person as its subject does not qualify an article for this criterion. " however I also gave a deletion reason as "Unremarkable people, groups, companies and web content. An article about a real person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content that does not assert the importance or significance of its subject."
If you want it to pass you have to include third part comment of Fixya and demonstrate it is notable in terms of being the subject of proper newspaper reviews etc. see also WP:N. Hope this helps --BozMo talk 10:36, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gallery of Australian banknotes

To say "merge into Banknotes of the Australian dollar" the result would be exactly the same as all the info is set out there in a table already(which complies with WP:FU), this made the merge suggestions redundant. The overall consensus was that the Gallery article was unnecessary, hence closing as delete. Gnangarra 06:19, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Hey, i just added assesment functions to {{Electron}}, which I copied off numismaticnotice. Would you please take a look at it make sure I didn't screw anything up.  :) Thanks Joe I 04:37, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

While I don't see any blatant problem on that template itself, something grave is concerning me. Copying and pasting code is a bad practice. This is probably not obvious to people who don't work at in a programming or software environment, but it's really the number 1 don't-do in this field. Let's say, for some reason in the future, we don't want yellow background for class B, then editors would have to change thousands of copied and pasted templates. Not only this process is time consuming, it is prone to human mistake. We should follow a {{navbox generic}}-{{Currencies of Africa}} model. Another "good" example is {{languageicon}}-{{zh icon}}. Bad examples include {{Money-stub}}-{{Coin-stub}}. But fixing this is completely out of the scope of 1 or 2 people. It seems that you're involved with multiple projects. Do you know where I should bring this up? Village pump? --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 05:38, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
OK, thanks for the tip. You could try a few places to address this: Wikipedia:Template namespace, Wikipedia:Template messages, Wikipedia:Talk page templates, or the meta m:Help:Template. Good luck :) Joe I 06:24, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Electronics tagging

I started tagging categories. What I've done so far is at Wikipedia:WikiProject Electronics/Categories. I started wondering if the project covers software/internet/etc. I can untag things if it's wrong. I'll take a break until I hear from you. Also, I listed a couple of categories to skip at User:WatchlistBot/Electronics. The template looked fine to me, but I'm not really an expert. Ingrid 16:58, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

I saw that you put Category:Computing in the exclusion list, so I removed the tags. I started tagging new categories, and tried to skip any that were about specific companies and software. It's hard for me to tell, so I tried to exclude anything I wasn't sure about. Please check the exclusion list, and if one of the categories should be tagged, please tell me how to handle its subcategories also. I'm also about to create the watchlist, although I haven't tagged any articles, so I'm not sure how useful it will be yet. It will be at Wikipedia:WikiProject Electronics/Articles sometime in the next few minutes. Ingrid 21:53, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Award

The Original Barnstar
For excellence in the improvement of portals all around Wikipedia, shown by both reviewing and maintaining them, I, S.D., present to you, Joe I, The Original Barnstar, on the timestamp of 23:05, 21 March 2007 (UTC).
Thanks SD, doin portals has been quite fun and, (do I dare say it) educational. :) Joe I 23:26, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
Hey, I just boxed in parts of the calendar, take a look tell me what ya think. Portal:Holidays/Calender. PS, thanks for the star, incase you didn't see my reply on my talk. :) Joe I 00:49, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
Exactly what I was thinking — a comment: "January, 2007" should be "January 2007". Regarding the barnstar, you're welcome — well-deserved too, seeing that you're everywhere (well, almost =D) on portal peer review and featured portal candidates. Happy editing, S.D. 01:24, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
K, sounds good, I'll finish it up. Thanks :) Joe I 02:10, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Poetry Portal

I worked on this portal (more details) — hopefully, you'll reconsider your opinion on whether this portal is still featured status. Cheers, S.D. 04:04, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

I've already changed my vote :) Joe I 14:00, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Texas

As long as the template name hasn't changed, I don't need to update anything. Let me know if you want me to auto-tag anything (like class=stub for all articles in a stub category, or images/cats/etc). Ingrid 17:34, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

Good, Yes, I was hoping you could tag the cats and images, those would take alot of time. The stubs would still need an importance, so we'll just let people take those. Thanks. Joe I 01:46, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
