"Sealing the Homunculus" (「ホムンクルス封印」 Homunkurusu Fūin?) is episode 47 of the Fullmetal Alchemist TV series originally aired 2004-09-04.
Wrath, who was killed by Lust when he tried to stop her and Edward from going to Shou Tucker’s factory, revives after having a nightmare about the Gateway from which he came. He is desperate to find his “mommy,” Sloth. Ed arrives at the factory where Sloth is “rescuing” Alphonse from Tucker. Ed lures Sloth onto a copy of the Homunculus Seal transmutation circle that Dante used to weaken Greed, achieving the same effect with Sloth. However, Alphonse is conflicted about using a portion of their mother’s body to kill the Homunculus he and Ed created from their mother, so he removes the piece of their mother’s corpse from the circle and throws it away. Outside the factory, Wrath picks up the discarded remains and absorbs them into his body to keep Ed from using them against Sloth. Sloth pours herself into Al’s armor and forces him to walk away. Ed chases after them while Wrath and Lust continue to battle.
In the midst of battle, Wrath finds the locket containing Lust’s human remains. He uses those remains, the forgotten Homunculus Seal on the floor and his unique ability to perform alchemy to seal Lust and then kill her. As she is dying, Lust wonders if the only reason she wanted to become human was so that she could die. Ed catches up to Al and Sloth in another part of the factory. Despite Sloth’s strength, Al manages to help Ed complete a transmutation circle so they can freeze Sloth right inside Al’s armor. In flashback, we see how Dante fed incomplete Philosopher’s Stones to Sloth and recruited Sloth into her conspiracy. Sloth admits to retaining some of Trisha Elric’s memories, which torment her. She thaws and escapes from Al’s armor. Ed stabs Sloth with his automail-sword as he transmutes it to sodium, which causes Sloth (being made of water, which is hightly reacitve with sodium) to explode. However, she regains her usual form and taunts Ed that she cannot die so easily. Hoping to rescue Sloth from Ed and Al, and not wanting to lose her again, Wrath fuses himself to her, unwittingly reuniting her with the remains of Trisha Elric. This paralyzes her, giving Ed enough time to transmute the water that makes up Sloth's body into ethanol, which will simply evaporate into the air.
