The Endless Column

Sculptural Ensemble of Constantin Brâncuşi from Târgu Jiu is an homage to the Romanian heroes of the First World War. The three sculptures — The Table of Silence, The Kiss Gate and The Endless Column — are disposed on an axis 1275 m long, oriented West-East.

The Table of Silence is made from limestone. Originally the twelve chairs were much closer to the table and were arranged in pairs.

The Gate of the Kiss, of Banpotoc travertine (marble), features a kiss motif on the pillars of the gate. The whole work is supported on a steel axle, set in a concrete foundation 5 m square.

The Endless Column stacks 17 rhomboidal cast iron modules (formerly brassed) in a 29.3 m high column. The modules were made in the central workshop of Petroşani, assembled under the engineer Ştefan Georgescu-Gorjan, and completed October 27, 1938. The column was restored in 1964.
