Scrotes is a generic term for a type of British youth, teenager or young adult. They are characterised by an ability to annoy all members of the community as well a propensity for petty criminal behaviour and violence. Scrote is used predominalty as a catch-all phrase, for instance smack head, druggy, rat boy or rat kid, chavs, scallies, wino, townie or hoody can all be referred to as Scrotes depending on how obnoxiously they are behaving.

Scrotes can be found both individually and in congregations of small to large (twenty+) groups. Their ages can range from five years old up to thirty years old. Scrotes who hang around in groups are generally autonomous of UK society, so they have have developed their own culture, customs and laws.

Children and teenagers often become Scrotes because they come from broken homes where they have little parental guidance. Due to their diminished environments it is easy for them to fall into anti-social behaviour and juvenile delinquency.

Sadly the usual modus operandi of most Scrotes is to bring pain, suffering and oppression to the given community where they live. Through petty criminal acts such as vandalism, muggings, street robbery, intimidation (particularly old people, vulnerable adults and ethnic minorities - for instance e.g. Chinese takeaways or Indian restaurants) and random acts of violence.

[edit] Etymology

The word Scrote is a shortening of Scrotum. The profane meaning is ball-bag or bollocks. One suggestion is: An obnoxious half-wit who resembles many of the qualities of the unwashed male scrotal sack. i.e. smells, rather funny looking, leathery appearance with random tufts of sprouting hair.

[edit] Legality

Scrotes have been around for many years, but have now been recognised by the government via the Antisocial Behaviour Order or ASBO. This was created to attempt to regulate the behaviour of Scrotes, though the effectiveness of the system is often called into question by many areas of the community as ASBOs are often seen as a badge of honour within Scrote circles.

[edit] Lifestyle

Scrotes tend to congregate in groups in public places. The group is mainly male-orientated but women and girls can be included. The Scrote is mostly likely to found at night in front of local convenience stores, off licences, playing fields, shopping centres and fast food outlets. Likewise, Scrotes can be seen at transport centres such as bus and railway stations or near underpasses, subway and underground car parks.

The dress code of Scrotes can be anything from Hoodies to designer track suits. But because the age range can be so varied, the enforcement of any dress code is not as strict as with other British sub-cultures.

Scrotes tend to be socially-excluded individuals. For younger Scrotes this can mean they are on suspension or expulsion from a school or a higher-education college. For older Scrotes this can mean being an unskilled, long-term benefit claimant who is known to the local police. Many also have drink and drug problems; their addictions often being the cause of their anti-social behaviour.

Crimes associated with scrotes are shoplifting, burglary, mugging, joyriding and vandalism. Many UK housing associations and councils now have CCTV and employ community support patrols to tackle these sorts of offences. Community support officers (CSOs) do not have full police powers e.g. power of arrest but they work in conjunction with the police to curb anti-social behaviour. Usually CSOs will talk to Scrotes about their behaviour before contacting the police by radio.

Nevetheless, one of the biggest problems caused by Scrotes is being an untaxed, unlicenced and uninsured driver. Scrotes call it joyriding the police, however, call it Taken Without Owner's Consent (TWOC).

A police nickname for vehicles being used in this manner is a 'scrota-motor'.
