[edit] American Idol
On January 24, 2007, Scottsburg resident Nakia Claiborne appeared on the New York audition episode of American Idol. While the judges initially appeared to enjoy her performance, she was eventually denied a chance to go to Hollywood. Several people have taken exception to her ouster citing her performance of "Dancing in the Street" [1]. The judges, sans Simon Cowell, asked Claiborne to sing a second slower song. After hearing her rendition of "Dreaming of You" by Selena, the judges said they enjoyed her singing, but declined to send her on to Hollywood.
Claiborne's heart-felt display of emotion after her audition, which was devoid of the arrogance and self-absorption displayed by many Idol contestants, touched many people [2].
