Scottish cringe
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Scottish cringe is a Scottish cultural cringe claimed to exist by some politicians and other commentators.[1][2][3]
These Scottish cultural commentators claim there that a sense of cultural inferiority is felt by many Scots, particularly in relation to southern English culture, and consequent underachievement. The cringe is said to manifest as:[citation needed]
- embarrassment at aspects of national heritage such as the Scots language and the kilt (see Tartanry)
- the Scottish accent (especially the nasal variety - as portrayed by the band "The Proclaimers")
- a sycophantic attachment to the way things are done in other countries such as England or the United States
- a tendency of many Scots to view themselves as victims of the British establishment
