[edit] Playing career

Hartnell was the sixth overall pick in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft by the Nashville Predators. A gritty 6 ft 2 in left winger, he was the youngest player in franchise history to play for the Predators. Through five seasons with the team which drafted him, Hartnell has played in 372 games, accumulating 71 goals and 101 assists for his career. During the 2003-2004 season, Scott had 3 game-winning goals, two of which occurred in overtime. In his first career playoff series in the first round against Detroit in 2004, he tied the team high with 3 points (1G, 2A). During the 2004/05 NHL lockout, he helped Vålerenga win the Norwegian Championship, together with Chris Mason and Travis Brigley.

In the 2005-06 NHL season, Hartnell accumulated a career high 25 goals and 23 assists, for a total of 48 points. Despite his impressive stats, Predators coach Barry Trotz frequently criticized Hartnell for his lack of intensity and effort. Scott Hartnell also become known for his mental lapses, resulting in unnecessary penalties (totaling 101 PIMs, second on the team). Hartnell spent most of the season relegated to the fourth line, yet saw extensive time on the power play and penalty kill units.
