Scott is a surname originating in the Scottish Borders. It comes from the Middle English word for Scottish Gaels, and hence was probably first used by a family or families of Gaelic language or origin who had settled in this area, an area that, unlike the rest of Scotland, was never fully Gaelic-speaking.

The name subsequently became a forename, and the descendents of this kin-group since spread throughout the world giving the name to dozens of towns and cities.
