[edit] Test format
At the middle school level, the test is sixty minutes long and consists of fifty multiple choice questions. The questions come from a wide range of topics, but no calculator is permitted to be used on the test.
At the high school level, the test is two hours long and consists of sixty multiple choice problems. Use of a simple scientific calculator and scratch work are permitted on the test. There are twenty questions each of biology, chemistry, and physics.
[edit] Scoring
At the middle school level, each problem answered correctly is worth five points, and an incorrect answer deducts two points from the score. Skips neither count for nor against the competitor. This yields a range of scoring between -100 and 250, with scores over the 200 mark being rather rare.
At the high school level, each problem answered correctly gives you six points. Each problem answered incorrectly takes away two points. Unanswered problems do not affect your score, and skipping is permitted. Scores can range from -120 to 360. Generally, at district, regional and state meets, students are ranked according to their overall score in addition to being ranked based on how well they perform on the three individual disciplines of the test (biology, chemistry, and physics).
