Image talk:Scipio destroys carthage.jpg

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I've changed the caption slightly to reflect Polybius's judgment about Scipio's feelings. The picture may be romantic but the historical sources say Scipio burst into tears at the sight of the destruction of Carthage. I also removed the word genocide. The people of Carthage were mostly killed by starvation and during the final assault on the city. The troops were allowed to plunder the city for some days. It is likely that the 50,000 Carthaginian survivors that were sold into slavery were sold within a day or two. Therefore at the moment of the picture Carthage was empty of Carthaginians and therefore any genocide had already taken place.
