Five Pillars of Wikipedia

Float around for awhile until you find something that tickles your fancy. One easy way to do this is to hit the random page button in the navigation bar to the left. There are also many great committees and groups that focus on particular jobs. My personal favorite stomping grounds are Wikipedia:Translation into English and Wikipedia:Cleanup for sloppy articles. Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has several other wiki projects that you might enjoy.

There are a few crucial points to keep in mind when editing. Be civil with users, strive to maintain a neutral point of view, verify your information, and show good etiquette like signing your comments with four tildas like this: ~~~~ If you have any more questions, always feel free to ask me anything on my talk page or ask the true experts at Wikipedia:Help desk. Again, welcome! -- Draeco 07:41, 27 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Are you talking about Elefantes?

If so, then the comment I made to the anon who made the changes applies here. Lyrics are not acceptable on Wikipedia. If they're copyrighted, they're illegal, if they're not copyrighted, they belong on Wikisource. User:Zoe|(talk) 00:13, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

Are the lyrics copyrighted? Who wrote them? If they're just "traditional", you can put them on a Wikisource page, then put an external link to the Wikisource page on the Elefantes article. Or, if there's already a page on the Internet with the lyrics, just link to that. User:Zoe|(talk) 02:32, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Templates

Templates are a little trickier to create than other pages. Make sure you have a good idea for a template then follow these steps:

  1. Find a template very similar to the one you wish to create. Access that template's page, click edit, copy all the text you see, and leave without saving any changes to the template.
  2. Access any normal page, click edit, and write at the bottom {{NEW NAME}} (you should think up an individual name and put it in the brackets in place of where I have written NEW NAME).
  3. Click the "Preview" button below the edit box.
  4. The preview that comes up should have your template name in red at the bottom. Click on this red name.
  5. You should arrive at a page that allows you to create a new template. Select that option and paste the text you copied in step 1.
  6. Replace the text as you like, substitute images, change box sizes, etc.
  7. Save when you finish and refer back to the template with {{NEW NAME}}.

[edit] Page revert

I couldn't figure out how to make your new template work without messing up the whole page, so I just reverted the page to the version directly before you added the Temper template. other than that, I don't know what to tell you. There could be a problem in the code written for that template. Draeco 00:31, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Copyrights and personals

There are really two points in your question. First all, Wikipedia is generally based on the principles of free information sharing, so there's not really a mechanism to protect the material you post on it. Many users will respect your rights if you specify that your works are not in the public domain, but that is not the general trend.

Second, Wikipedia is not really a journal. You are of course free to post anything you please on your user page, includes even "free writes," personal essays, and so on. However, material like that is generally more suited to personal blogs and sites like bebo, myspace, etc. Draeco 06:13, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks for Wikithanks

Thanks for the Wikithanks, it's greatly appreciated -- in fact, it's my first award on Wikipedia. I moved it to my talk page, but otherwise kept it basically the same. It's been a pleasure helping you; keep asking! Draeco 06:39, 25 December 2005 (UTC)

Okay, done it for you! :D --Celestianpower háblame 15:34, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Andy master chief.jpeg

Hello. Regarding Image:Andy master chief.jpeg, the image cannot be public domain because it includes a copyrighted promotional image from Halo. The combined image is a derivative work and is subject to copyright. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 20:47, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

So what do I do? Can I not have it on my page or do I have to put a different tag on it? or what? schyler 22:12, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Well, you may wish to try claiming fair use, using {{fairusein}}, but I think this would be a pretty tenuous fair use claim. If you decided to do that, I would then add the tag {{fairusereview}} to get someone else's opinion on it. It may end up getting deleted. BTW, I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advise. Good luck. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 22:31, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Subheading links

You link to sub-headings by adding "#" and "subheading name" to the end of the link, so for the link to your section of Madness Combat, the link would look like this Madness Combat#Amateur Madness, but it looks like that section has been mostly deleted. Maybe you should make a link from that (now-abbreviated) section to a new article called Amateur Madness, since it seems to be a separate concept. Draeco 18:30, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] userpage

I edited your user page because of rank article renames made to meet the {{tl:ScoutingWikiProject}} standards. We just formalized the project. You are welcome to join. Make Eagle! .Rlevse 20:58, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Please adopt your state

I have now completed the transition from state list to articles on Scouting in each state, as per Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Scouting/RulesStandards, for merger and improvement of articles. Please help fill in some blanks at Scouting in Texas! Thanks, YiS, Chris 09:36, 28 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Scouting Barnstarn

Did you see this proposal? Scouting Barnstarn --evrik 19:47, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

  • The bronze star you requested is now available.evrik 03:30, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Scouting Barnstar - Where to put it?

I believe that the award that was created for the Scouting Barnstar should be a topical award. Scouting is a world-wide movement that has served youth in many countries for more than 100 years and represents the youth of the world at the United Nations.

It has been suggested that the award be given as a PUA. The first line on the PUA page reads, "This page provides a collection of awards created by individual Wikipedians." The Scouting Barnstar was created by the WikiProject Scouting.

Currently, the is a discussion going on at Wikipedia_talk:Barnstars#Removed_the_scouting_barnstar. Please comment there if you are interested.evrik

[edit] An Esperanzial note

As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Other than that, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you an Esperanzially good new WikiYear :D Thank you! --Celestianpower háblame 16:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] C Belle

Hi Schyler,

I'm glad you think I sound stupid. Fits the tone of this little episode... Please sign comments, especially when voting to keep articles you wrote. Not doing THAT looks stupid on 2 counts. Filling an article with redlinks looks stupid and is not welcomed by editors or admins. Uploading / displaying an image from an "unconfirmed website" with no copyright status looks stupid. If the band is notable, start an article about them, people will judge its merits. I have nothing against you or the band who are presumably pretty good. Of course we've all had our vanity pages deleted, its the first thing that happens to practically every WP user. I read the WP criteria and deleted mine straight after. Then I started editing and creating articles about real, encylopedic subjects. Take it easy Deiz 03:37, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

  • No troubles, bubbles. Looking forward: "major music competition". If you don't want to end up in AfD with an entry for the band you'd better have a good argument as to why this competition is major. Think about the "majors" in golf and tennis. It's a big word. Go gettem Deiz 04:06, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Reply, about your band

Hi Schyler! Thanks for your message. I wouldn't suggest making a page for your band, as middle school bands generally aren't notable enough for their own encyclopedia page. For that matter, most high school bands aren't notable either. In both cases, the band would likely only qualify for a sentence or section on the page for their school. However, most middle and high schools don't have their own Wikipedia page either! You'll notice that all of the schools/bands that I was a part of are all red-links (Deerpark Middle School, Deerpark Middle School band, McNeil High School, McNeil High School Maverick marching band). However, you're welcome to include as much information about yourself, your band, your band director, etc. on your user page, or on your own personal web page or blog.

Thanks a lot for your contributions to Wikipedia, and feel free to message me if you want to talk or have any questions about anything else (Wikipedia, Wikipedia policies, band, Texas etc.)! EWS23 | (Leave me a message!) 04:17, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

Yes, you can make User:Schyler/Christine Belle! Just click on the red link and copy the page into that. This is one of the easiest ways to make sub-pages to your user page should you need it in the future. Generally, Wikipedia is not web server space for your own personal stuff (see WP:NOT), but considering this is directly Wikipedia related, I don't think anyone would have a problem with it (as long as you don't make it a habit). On a side note, I think you have reason to be proud of the page you made. Most pages we delete as non-notable or under WP:VANITY are fairly underdeveloped. Your page has the tone and look of a Wikipedia page. If you can take that intuition and editing skill and apply it, I'm sure you'll continue to make a good contributor! [edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Missbelle.jpeg

Thanks for uploading Image:Missbelle.jpeg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images on Wikipedia is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. You can get help on image copyright tagging from Wikipedia talk:Image copyright tags. -- Carnildo 16:18, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image Tagging Image:Bush_bash.jpeg

Thanks for uploading Image:Bush_bash.jpeg. The image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. -- Carnildo 10:05, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hi from User:AlMac|(talk)

I saw your question about userboxes on the Help page, then came to take a look at yours.

  • I share your joy in finding cute boxes to add to my page, and probably will plagarizism some from you.
  • I found that Wiki defaults are somewhat hostile to some Browsers, such as IE which is why my boxes are now pretty much in columns, interspliced with relevant text, so as to avoid one big pile of userboxes that almost seems unreadable.

In the News ... Do they know yet what caused the Egyptian ferry to sink? The US news media tends to focus on missing white girls (even though US statistics more men go missing than women, more blacks than whites), and the latest fad or headline. The last I saw, they were saying they did not know if:

  • Defective like the ferry that sank in Scandanavia (where the doors not closed properly, and water came in where it not supposed to)
  • Traveling in bad weather rough seas when they should have known to check the weather report, and avoid being in harm's way.
  • Terrorist sabotage, like a bomb on board.

My world view ... I used to be an Idealist, but now I think I am just a Survivor

How will I die ... probably by chocking. You see I have false teeth, which makes it difficult to tell if food has been properly chewed

Currently I am not into Guns, but within Science Fiction, I guess my favorite would be the quantum black hole shotgun. You see quantum black holes have a short life in our Universe, they collapse after a short time, so a weapon that sends a stream of them out, will go through anything, then after they do the damage, they disappear. Something like using Ice as a knife, then after cutting up the victim, the ice melts and the evidence, such as fingerprints, just evaporates.

Check my page, user contributions. I probably have typing errors all over the place., plus since my eyesight has been going downhill (I was borne 8 Feb 1944) I have trouble seeing difference between comma and period, colon and semi-colon, so if I mistype, it is not obvious on screen that I have done so.

User:AlMac|(talk) 07:28, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

It is interesting how different people have expectations and stereotypes about other groups of people. I flunked out of College in my Junior year in the early 1960's and fortunately did not get sent to Vietnam. At the time, my family and I had the quaint notion that there was some kind of relationship between mathematics and computers, so because math was my best subject in school, I went looking for a job in computers, and almost never needed to use math ever again in my career.
This was in something that at the time was called mini-computers, but were not much more than tabulating equipment. The PC was invented in the 1970's, and I soon took a look at what the Internet had to offer, and I was not impressed. But as PCs began to make inroads into the business computing world in the late 1980's and early 1990's, it became neccessary for me to revisit what they had to offer, because people were connecting them to the large computer networks where my career was, and still is.
In the business computing world, I am a programmer, security officer, troubleshooter, analyst, etc. while in the PC world I am a user. I know enought to be dangerous, but only in several narrow areas.
My kid sister, who teaches math in high school, still promotes the idea that there is this relationship. I asked her about that & she says that money to various depts of the school goes where the school board thinks computers will be effective, so it is like a propaganda war of different depts linking what they do, to computers, because that's where the scarce money is in today's education. Here's info about my sister the math teacher. User:AlMac|(talk) 09:28, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
