Schulman family

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Schulman family (also written Schulmann, Shulman, Sholman and Scholman) is a family of Baltic German noble origin first mentioned in 1495 on the island of Ă–sel.

Their reputed origins lie in East Frisia: the Schul- element of the name apparently originates from the German word "Schole" (meaning "shoal").

The main part of the family resided in Estonia till 1939 when they resettled in the Wartegau in Germany. After World War II the few still in the Baltic region resettled in Germany and Canada.

A branch of the family, now the most numerous, became Swedish nobility in Finland. Other branches included another one in Sweden, which was extinct in the 18th century, and a Livonian branch that was extinct during World War I.
