[edit] History

Captain Charles Schreiner founded Schreiner Institute in 1917 and worked toward its establishment until 1923. The military institute was created for young boys and included both secondary school and Junior College curriculum to prepare the students for further education. The year of 1971 marked the end of the military training used by the Institute. In 1973, it began using only college curriculum and changed its name to Schreiner College. The college experience changed again in 1982 when it became a four-year college. Not until 2001 did the college become Schreiner University and begin offering master's degrees.

[edit] Accreditation

Schreiner University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award masters, baccalaureate and associate degrees.

The University also holds accreditation by the Texas Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners and is approved by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) for teacher certification programs.

The University holds membership in the American Association for Higher Education, The American Council on Education, the Association of Presbyterian Colleges and Universities, the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, the Association of Texas Colleges and Universities, and the Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas.

[edit] Greek life

On February 21, 2001 Greek life was established when Chi Phi established a colony at Schreiner University. This completed the transition for Schreiner University, from a commuter college to a university committed to student life. In 2005 the colony was charted into the Iota Theta Chapter of the Chi Phi Fraternity. The fraternity grew from 5 to 22 members in only 3 semesters. Joining the only fraternity on campus at the time the sorority Delta Phi Epsilon established its Gamma Gamma chapter on January 25, 2003. On May 2 of the same year Phi Delta Theta established its Texas Sigma chapter, with its establishment it became the second fraternity on campus. In 2006 Theta Epsilon chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha was recognized thus becoming the second sorority on campus.
