School of Hope

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The School of Hope is a home school program located in Alberta, Canada. The school office of the School of Hope is in Vermilion, Alberta. This year, 2006, will mark the school's tenth anniversary as a virtual home school. It is one of the largest publicly-funded home school programs in Canada, with almost 2,000 students.

Home schooling is legal throughout Canada, but since Alberta is the only province that fully funds home-based education, there are a number of publicly-funded home school programs in that province. As one of the schools under the auspices of East Central Alberta Catholic School Division, The School of Hope offers three education programs:

  • The Teacher-Directed Program is a self-paced program where the students learn under the guidance of a certified teacher.
  • The Combined Program is an asynchronous program whereby the students learn under the guidance of a certified teacher for a minimum of 50% at the elementary and Jr. high level, and 20% at the Sr. high level.
  • The Parent-Directed Program is a program where the parents are responsible for all of the child's program. A facilitator employed by the school offers support for the family, and with input from the parents, evaluates student progress.

The surge of interest in home schooling programs in the 2000s has been facilitated by technology, specifically the growth of the Internet, and The School of Hope offers online courses and web-based communication tools such as FirstClass and "Elluminate" , a real-time virtual classroom environment, to help facilitate communication and community online learning.

In 2005,the School of Hope as named one of the Top 40 Great Schools in Canada as chosen by Today's Parent Magazine (http://www.todaysparent.com)
