Scholes, Holmfirth

Scholes is a village in the Holme Valley of West Yorkshire. It is has a population of 1,925 (2001 census) and is 11km (7m) south west of Huddersfield and is situated high above Holmfirth 2km (1m) away.
The name Scholes was possibly taken from the Scandinavian language meaning 'the temporary huts or sheds'. A nearby hamlet to Scholes is known as "Paris".
There are two other villages in West Yorkshire also called Scholes one near Cleckheaton and the other is just west of Barwick in Elmet, to the east of Leeds.
There is also a small village called Scholes Ref:- just to the northwest of Kimberworth near Rotherham in South Yorkshire.
Scholes was the birthplace of the presenter and entertainer Roy Castle, well known as the presenter of the long-running BBC show Record Breakers.
