Schneider National

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Schneider National, Inc. is the largest privately owned truckload carrier and third-largest of all trucking & logistics companies in the United States based on annual revenue ,and currently operates 14,000 tractors, 40,000 trailers, and has partnerships with over 6,000 carriers. Schneider drives more than five million loaded miles per day, and is utilized by two-thirds of the companies that make up the Fortune 500. The company operates three major areas of business; Truckload, & Intermodal, and Logistics. It has been based in Green Bay, Wisconsin since its founding in 1935 and operates in the 48 contiguous states and Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico, and the Netherlands. Schneider is well-known for painting their tractors and trailers Omaha orange-PMS 165 (although their training literature calls it "international safety orange") which, while more expensive, foots to their often-stated emphasis on trucking safety. Their orange trucks are known inside and outside the company as "pumpkin trucks".

[edit] China

Schneider is currently looking into expanding into China, initially by using independent contractors. The Chinese trucking industry is very fragmented — for example, a large trucking company averages around thirty trucks. This has led Schneider officials to believe that the company will be able to gain a foothold quickly. Currently, a transcom load of approximately 3000 miles in the United States takes an average of seven days from pickup to delivery, but the same length of haul in China takes fifty-one days due to approximately twenty-six interchanges between carriers for the same load. Schneider hopes to use its trucking experience to help modernize the China truck transportation sector, especially because it operates many operating centers throughout the United States and Canada that provide services to their drivers, somewhat similar to truck stops.
