[edit] Userbox Debate

Dude. you seriously need to cutdown on your userboxes :D. The only thing they currently say about you, is that you frantically collect UB'es - The DJ 13:11, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

No they don't. They also say a lot about me! Like my name, what I like, and other stuff! Scalene 06:55, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
You could say all of that information more succinctly, elegantly and with more personal flair if you wrote a few paragraphs about yourself and deleted all of the userboxes. CuiviénenT|C|M, Thursday, 18 May 2006 @ 02:58 UTC
Man thats a lot of userboxes. Why not remove a few of them and turn them into paragraphs? Makes it a bit easier to read. Loompyloompy313 14:43, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
Allright, I've come up with a solution. I'm creating a 'userbox biography.' It can be viewed at User:Scalene/Userboxes - but, I'm going to need help. I'm removing every single user box from my page, but I'd like to know what userboxes should be kept. Scalene 09:48, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Looking for Alibrandi

Did you edit Looking for Alibrandi into an article solely about the movie? As the movie came after the book, was of arguably lesser quality and had a number of differences in plot, do you not think this was inappropriate? Instead of getting rid of all the information regarding the book, you could have instead split the article into Looking for Alibrandi and Looking for Alibrandi (movie). --Kronecker 03:24, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Perhaps, but Looking FOr Alibrandi is part of Wikiproject:WikiFilms, an effort to collect all the world's films. The tag was there as well. I went with my gut instinct. Scalene 08:43, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] My opinion?

Well, About the Internet censorship, My opinion is: It is in expectation. The PRC government need a flourishing and stable country, and a democratic one with human rights will break the stable state. So, they will not let people in PRC see things such as Tibet independence, “法轮功”, etc.

By the way, An extra effect is, that Chinese Wikipedia now is quieter than before, because many people in PRC cannot visit here, so there is less dispute. 百家姓之四 (Lee) 討論 (Discussion) 01:21, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

well, since I left China at the age of 11,I don't really understand that much about the government and stuff. But one thing I know for sure,I like my rights and freedom in the US Waaaaaay better than in China. Chinese government are too sensitive imo, then again...what do you expect from a (semi)communist contry?if they sencor the simplified chinese wikipedia, then they should use the traditional one instead, although the characters might be a tad bit hard to read...it's stil lbetter than nothing.and yea...the simplified chinese wikipedia is gonna go downhill until it's no more. [edit] WikiProject Narnia

Hello, I noticed that you edited an article related to, or expressed interest in The Chronicles of Narnia. I thought you may be interested in knowing that there is a WikiProject working to improve articles about Narnia, your help would be greatly appreciated. Please consider joining the WikiProject Narnia. Thank you! Bornagain4 18:31, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

You may want to tell this to an Administrator, I have no power to block or unblock IPs. As for your little problem, I would try to report this to the Administration of the School, to work out a policy for Wikipedia. °≈§→ Robomæyhem: T/←§≈° 15:30, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Logo on Template:Dundee United F.C. Squad page

I'm all for it - although a much smaller size - but it will no doubt be removed shortly. I think logos are only allowed on the main club page and that is all. Great idea, though, and it looks very good. Fedgin 09:39, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

You know, it loks good - but I think it should stay. It's a lot easier than looking at the title, in my opinion. You instantly know what the club is. Personally, I thought it made the page more 'personal'. Scalene 09:45, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
As Fedgin says, the logos are only permitted on the club's article.  sʟυмɢυм • т  c  20:43, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
On a similar note, I have reverted your addition of a logo to the Celtic squad template. Use of Fair use images in templates is forbidden by thr fair use policy. Oldelpaso 11:55, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Added a post at Wikipedia:Personal attack intervention noticeboard

Cheers. I will. Also, if he's reading this, I think he should know that I've printed a copy. And I think he'll also know who I am planning to show it to, if it continues. Scalene 10:29, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
Who are you showing it to?
You want to find out? Leave the page alone. Otherwise, it comes out. Scalene 11:26, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
what comes out? just tell me, might as well, maybe ill stop. XD
I show someone. You suffer the consequences. Not going any more into detail than that. Scalene 11:31, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
That is lame == its the internet man, doesn't matter you who you show it to because 1. I can't be blocked because i can change my IP, 2.I don't care even if you successfully block me because im not using my home computer XD
Who said I was going to block you? Anyway, don't you think wikipedia has dealt with people who use IP changers before? I'm going, now. Think about it. Scalene 11:38, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
Whatever, nerdball.
Fine. I didn't want to have to do this, but, it is on it's way to Mr. Mulherin.

[edit] Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, Scalene, to Esperanza! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is Stressbusters, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Proposals.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact our administrator general Natalya by email or talk page. Consider introducing yourself at the Esperanza talk page! Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, you may find help at an IRC tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

[edit] Opposition to the Iran-Iraq war

I'm not sure where we go from here. I think the issues have been outlined quite simply and accurately in the RFC. We have numerous articles about opposition to various wars. They discuss demonstrations, editorials, speeches against the referenced wars. This article has some anecdotal reports of desertion (concentrating on one side only). That's it. Fan-1967 17:12, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

I might also note that the opinions I have expressed are fundamentally the same as those in LittleDan's AFD nom. Fan-1967 17:54, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

I commented on the deletion, though, as Fan-1967 says, our opinions are basically the same. LittleDantalk 19:40, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Hey! Thanks for your comments. However, I think you should understand that a RfC is not a decision making process. All I do is try and help all parties reach a compromise they are happy with.
Also, I ask that you raise any issues you have in the RfC section. That way, Patch can easily view them. Also, I don't have to go back and forth between pages that way... ;D ScaleneUserPageTalkContributionsBiographyЄ 22:42, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The verifiability rule

I disagree with your comment about there being cases where an article would not need a reliable source. WP:V is not negotiable, and it says If an article topic has no reliable, third-party sources, Wikipedia should not have an article on it. (often, this is termed Verifiability, not Truth)

Secondly, "using the program yourself" to find facts out is the very definition of original research, which isn't allowed on Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a publisher of original thought, so synthesis of facts from source material (which "using the program yourself" would count as) would be original research.

All articles should be sourced. The fact that many articles do not is because we don't have enough people checking articles, and because new people to Wikipedia don't understand this. ColourBurst 23:30, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Godwin's law

I hereby inform you that I will change the name to Conscription in Iran-Iraq War to avoid controversy and since I have received no response to the source I provided from Library of Congress.--Patchouli 18:31, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
The last AC meeting (full log)
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.
Signed...

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

[edit] Just a couple of wee tips

Hi, just saw your edit to User talk:BurnsvilleisGay, and wanted to pointr a couple things out:

When using certain template tags on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:test}} instead of {{test}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template.

and:

As a courtesy for other editors, it is a Wikipedia guideline to sign your talk page and user talk page posts. To do so simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments and your user name or IP address and the date will be automatically added along with a timestamp. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). For further info see the talk page guidelines. Thank you.

By the way, I'd already blocked that account due to their user name. Keep up the great work mate!  Glen  07:53, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:Shift.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Shift.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. [edit] Mistake using Popups?

Re your edit: on Talk:Healthy diet "08:55, 15 February 2007 Scalene (Talk | contribs) (Revert to the revision prior to revision 108288703 dated ..." If you look at only one previous edit it might look as if some comments were being deleted, but if you look at both previous edits you see that user Zeroin147 was merely editing the user's own comments. You should always provide an informative edit summary when reverting (i.e. "see talk" or an actual explanation of why you're reverting, not just the Popups edit summary) unless it's obvious vandalism. I think the version you reverted to had two copies of Zeroin147's comments. So it's not that big a deal. --Coppertwig 02:27, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wikiproject Narnia Newsletter March 2007

WikiProject Narnia Newsletter
Issue 1 - 2nd March 2007 . Written by User:Sp3000 (talkcontribs)
WikiProject Narnia News
  • The WikiProject has been a little quiet lately. There are still quite a lot of Narnia stubs. It has been nearly three months since we last worked on Minor characters in The Chronicles of Narnia, which still looks very much like a draft page. That would be a nice article to get into the main namespace.
Good and Featured Articles
Other news
  • WikiProject Narnia's first newsletter issue has been published. You're looking at it right now!
Member News
To-do
  1. Add characters and bios to minor character draft page.
  2. Expand Narnia stubs.
  3. Place links to the Narnia Portal on article pages by using {{portal|Narnia}}.
  4. Add the stub template {{Narnia-stub}} to articles in the category Category:Stub-Class Narnia articles so that there are the same number of articles in Category:Narnia stubs.
  5. Link the first mention of a year in all Narnia-related articles to Narnian timeline.
  6. Rewrite character articles to use the Narnian character example article format.
  7. Adopt an article and improve it to the best of your ability.
  8. Wikify The Chronicles of Narnia article, especially the new lead and Narnian Universe sections
From the founder

I am proud to present our first issue of the WikiProject Narnia Newsletter. I decided that we needed to alert everybody who had expressed interest in the project that there is much work to be done! Please check in every once in a while at the project talk page, and tell other project members what you've been up to in terms of Narnia articles.

Article of the Month: Edmund Pevensie
  • Edmund Pevensie is a major character in The Chronicles of Narnia. He appears as a principal character in three of the seven books. Edmund was the second to enter Narnia, although he tried to betray his siblings to the White Witch. However, Edmund managed to help save Narnia by neutralizing the White Witch's most powerful weapon, her wand.
Collaboration of the Month: Shasta (Narnia)
  • Shasta is currently quite short and not much of his background has been mentioned. The article also lacks images – but make sure if you upload one, you include a FU rationale. Contribute!

[edit] Assessment from an article page

Thank you for helping out with the Biography assessment drive. Good news. [edit] User:Scalene/Userpages/Rounded

Hi Scalene,

Category talk:User namespace templates
I’ve added User:Scalene/Userpages/Rounded, a template for a userpage that allows a user to create a default page. It needs a home, however. Any ideas?

Just spotted the above, went to the page and think it looks good! Category:User namespace templates would seem a suitable home if you placed a copy of the page in the Template namespace, i.e. created a copy of it named Template:Userpage template or the like. (Don't then forget to remove Category:User namespace templates from your original!) Yours, David Kernow (talk) 22:47, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
