Talk:Scanning tunneling spectroscopy

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The equations given are from Tersoff-Haman approximation. They assumed an s-wave tip. To describe the tunneling current better(and more useful - for example in calculating the STM images from DFT results), it's worth to use Bardeen's expression which uses the transition matrix. However, it still doesn't include the inelastic tunneling.

There are few basic techniques of STS measurement. Two most important are: I/V curve digital derivation and lock-in technique. In the latter, the derivation is acquired simultaneously with scanning. With proper normalization, dln(I)/dln(V) can be obtained.

Literature? Comments? I hope to return - to rewrite the article a bit..
