Scarlet Beetle is the name of a Marvel Comics villainous insect.

[edit] History

The Scarlet Beetle was once a normal beetle until it was mutated by radiation in a glowing, intelligent form. He determined that the insects of the world should take over Earth. He organized a small army which drew the attention of the first Ant-Man (Hank Pym). The Scarlet Beetle overpowered him with his army, stole his helmet, stole his gas belt, grew to human size, removed Hank's helmet, and buried him in a pit. Luckily, ants found and rescued him. He shrunk Scarlet Beetle, removed the helmet, and let him live the rest of its life as a normal beetle.

It wasn't long before the Scarlet Beetle retained its radioactive powers and possessed the residue of the Pym Particles in its system. He grew too large for its mind to function. In this form, he was encountered by and battled with Spider-Man. Bluebird, another costumed hero, assisted Spider-Man in the struggle and managed to interpret the Beetle's psychic cries. Spider-Man, after learning what had happened, figured that if he could shut down the Scarlet Beetle's mind, it would stop activating the Pym Particle and shrink back to normal size. He used one of Bluebird's containers of ether against it. It worked too well, and the Scarlet Beetle abruptly shrank out of sight.

The Scarlet Beetle's mind and powers returned again and he battled Ant-Man again until a down-on-his-luck shopkeeper decide to burn down his shop to gain insurance money. Since Scarlet Beetle's base was there, Ant-Man ran out and Scarlet Beetle was apparently crushed by a kerosene can dropped by the shopkeeper.

Later on, an army of human-sized Scarlet Beetles attacked Hank Pym and the West Coast Avengers when serving Communist leaders in Hungary. Many of them were crushed in the battle.

The Scarlet Beetle in solitary mind began to control a human mind in addition to the insects it can control. He captures the second Ant Man (Scott Lang) and forced him to come to his lair. He wanted to steal the mind-control helmet to amplify its powers. Scott succeeded in getting his helmet back and used it to turn the ants against the Scarlet Beetle. The conflicting mental commands tore down the Scarlet Beetle's headquarters and Scott barely escaped.

Scarlet Beetle in its human-sized form and with an army of robot insects also fought the She-Hulk. When he made a comment against the She-Hulk, she smashed Scarlet Beetle with a newspaper.

Last we've seen of the Scarlet Beetle, He went on the show Inside the Monster's Lair, hosted by Dollar Bill. He was offended by the host and audience laughing at how he had been defeated in the past and demanded the interview be ended.
