The Scarlet-throated Tanager Compsothraupis loricata is a small passerine bird, one of the tanager family. It is the only member of the genus Compsothraupis.
The Scarlet-throated Tanager is one of the largest tanagers, 21 cm in length and weighs 72.5g. Males have red throat. It occurs in Brazil at elevations of 200-1000 m. Groups of up to 8 individuals inhabit woodlands. Have habit of perching on branches high in trees. Slow-moving. In the breeding season males fluff feathers to show off white base of feathers on its back. Very protective of nests are well hidden deep in vegetation or in woodpecker holes. Known to use abandoned nests of other species.
