[edit] Format

First hosted by Shannen Doherty, and then by Stephen Baldwin, Scare Tactics was a hidden camera show putting unsuspecting victims into terrifying situations usually involving movie-style special effects and makeup. The victims, generally four per episode, are set up by friends/family in tandem with producers.

The unsuspecting victims on the show were usually lured to some location, either invited there by people they know (who were in on the act), or reporting for what they think is a new job. Soon they would experience some kind of terrifying scene; like a strange monster, a terrible accident, or a violent crime being committed, which were all staged while the victim was being secretly video recorded. The skits would end when the victim was completely terrified and someone would ask them, "Are you scared?" to which they usually replied "Yes!" They would get the reply, "You shouldn't be! You're on Scare Tactics!"

Some parts of the show were modified for the benefit of the viewing audience. For instance, a victim seeing the landing of a UFO would just see a bunch of strange lights beaming around them, but the viewer may see the alien ship appear as a special effect added later, something the victim never really sees from their point of view.

[edit] Criticism

Various viewers of the show have speculated as to whether or not the show is a real hidden camera show, or the whole thing is done by actors. Judging from message board comments it seems the opinion of the public is mixed. However, judging from the Kara Blanc lawsuit, (see below) one would have to assume that the show is real. Some critics have called the program "Candid Camera meets Jackass" and "more Jackass than Candid Camera".[citation needed]

[edit] Lawsuit

In May 2003, the creators of the show Scott Hallock and Kevin Healey were supposedly sued by a Los Angeles woman named Kara Blanc, (see Kara Blanc Lawsuit File which is on record at a lawfirm), who claimed that she suffered severe psychological distress as the result of a prank performed on her. In her case, Kara and her friend were terrified by an alien.
