[edit] The Founder

Nihat Yigit has been practicing martial arts for over thirty years. Starting with Taekwondo in 1973 he later moved on to Shaolin Kung Fu between 1974 - 1981. Later studying Kyokushin Kaikan Karate (1981 - 1986) and Ashihara karate (1986 - 1999). His aptitute for learning took him to search in other countries and participate in European tournaments.

He believed many martial arts were lacking in some ways for real street fight and combat. Hence between 1990-1994, Yabgu Nihat Yigit went to Japan, China, Korea etc. to investigate mainstream martial arts styles. His research lead to the creation of his new martial art system in 1990. He worked with sports scientists in some universities and historians together until 1999[citation needed] in March 18, 1999 Sayokan emerged.

[edit] The System

There are two education systems in Sayokan. First is Bravery Program A. It is for Alplik (Bravery) Games (competition). Sayokan's games are no point, no pads, no gloves knock down system.

Second is Alplik (Bravery) Program B. This program has 10 basic strategies and is for street fighting, military training (especially special forces).[citation needed]

It's a system of self-defense and the way of defending oneself. It has been analyzed, tested, scrutinized and accepted as a formal branch of martial arts by some of the world's known Grand Masters' societies[citation needed]. In the system, importance is not to the individual technique but how to apply it to sparring, to make it a natural action or response when fighting.

There are two education programs in Sayokan:

[edit] 1 - Bravery Program B (About self-defense)

This is a short training course (108 hours) teach strategic self-defense. The program is designed aiming for students to face real situations and succeed in defending themselves both physically and mentally. If the person doesn't have a high technical ability, this doesn't prevent application of Sayokan strategy. One to one, one to many sparring, with weapons or without, are used. There are TORALP (beginner), TUYUN (senior), second TUYUN programs and students who finish Tuyun programs are awarded 1.San black belt status.

With the Alps program improvisation is practised. The program is designed for adults, 25 years old and above and doesn't prepare a student for Bravery Games (championship, tournament etc.). There are forms, Tola, like kata or pumse, which must be practised with opponents.

There are two belts in the program, white and black belt. Black belt can be obtained up to 2nd San status. Only in the Bravery Program A, can higher black belt ranks be obtained.
