Saviana Stănescu

Saviana Stănescu was born in Bucharest, Romania. She has published five books of poetry: Making Love on the Barbed Wire, Advice for Housewives and Muses , and Outcast (all in Romanian), and Diary of a Clone and GOOGLE ME! (in English). Stanescu's published dramatic writing includes The Inflatable Apocalypse (Best Romanian Play of the year 2000); Black Milk (four plays in Romanian and English) and Final Countdown/Compte A Rebours (Antoine Vitez Center Award, Paris).
Together with Dr Carol Martin she edited the anthology of plays Global Foreigners. Stănescu has been a guest lecturer/speaker at universities such as: New York University, Penn State University, Smith College, Brown University, University of Connecticut, Hartford University, University of London - School of Slavonic and East European Studies, etc.
She has published texts in journals including: The Drama Review (TDR), American Theatre, Poetry London, Metamorphoses, Exquisite Corps, Pen Club magazine, The Temple, Watchword, Absinthe, The Saint Ann’s Review, BROOKLYN RAIL, www.offbroafway.com, www.nytheatre.com.
In Romania she worked as a cultural journalist and theatre critic, as well as Director of Interdisciplinary Programs for the Museum of Romanian Literature. She served on the board of the Contemporary Art Center – Bucharest. Her plays have been presented in the U.S., the U.K., France, Austria, Hungary, Macedonia, Montenegro, Mexico, Brasil, Poland, Germany, and Romania.
Recent New York productions include “Yokastas” (directed by Richard Schechner) at La MaMa Theater, “Balkan Blues” at the New York Fringe Festival, “Waxing West” and “Lenin’s Shoe” at The Lark Theatre, “Jelly-Love and Peanut-Butter” at Manhattan Theatre Source, “White Embers” at the Actors Studio, “Suspendida” at Ontological Theatre and “Aurolac Blues” at Here Arts Center (published in Plays and Playwrights 2006).
Stănescu holds an MA in Performance Studies (2001-2002 Fulbright fellow) and an MFA in Dramatic Writing (John Golden Award in Playwriting), both from Tisch School of the Arts, New York University where she now teaches in the Drama Department. She is currently the TCG New Generations international fellow and Director of Playwright Exchange with The Lark Theatre Company, playwright-in-residence of East Coast Artists (director Richard Schechner), and a NYSCA fellow with Women's Project.
