[edit] Saves The Day

Inspired by mid-1990s hardcore groups such as Lifetime, Saves the Day originally performed in the New Jersey hardcore scene under the name Sefler.

CJ Schriber formed the band originally when he had a lot of free time on his hands, and all he did was skate and play video games. He originally got the idea for the band when skating with George Quinn in 1978, when the two were into the hard rock band scene. CJ recruited members such as Zach Breslin and John Taylor. Ever since then, the band became quite popular.

Saves the Day released the 5-song acoustic [EP] I'm Sorry I'm Leaving in March of 1999. Including a sixth track on the vinyl b-side, this release showcased the musical depth and diverse talents of Chris Conley and guitarist David Soloway. On I'm Sorry I'm Leaving, with the relatively new band not having developed a particular sound, Conley and Soloway toyed with a variety of different styles, from melodic ballads to a poppy cover of Modern English's I Melt With You. Conley claims in the liner notes of their 2005 B-Sides Album release that, though his lyrics for these songs were meant to be cheesy, they have become incredibly popular over the years.

In 1999, Saves the Day returned to release Through Being Cool. This release would rocket the band into a larger market and strong popularity in the speed punk and pop punk era of the late 90s. The band had a more collective process of writing this album, with a fast paced and melodic speed punk sound, and a definitive development in Chris Conley's personal and intense lyrical style. With extensive touring and the additional release of two b-sides, Sell My Old Clothes, I'm Off to Heaven and A Drag in D Flat, on Vagrant Records' Another Year on the Streets compilation, the band showed the beginnings of a musical transformation that would lead them to release an extremely different sounding album in 2001 after signing with Vagrant Records.

Stay What You Are delivered power ballads and pop anthems experimenting with a more melodic sound. With this release, Conley's lyrics continued to play on dark metaphors in a bright manner, building a sound base for the band which would assume this stylistic change for another album. The album spawned singles and videos out of the songs "At Your Funeral" and "Freakish". This album is often considered Saves the Day's finest along with Through Being Cool. At the time of the recording, Saves The Day consisted of Chris Conley, Dave Soloway, Ted Alexander, Eben D'Amico, and Bryan Newman.

With the success of Stay What You Are, Saves the Day went on to sign with major label DreamWorks and release In Reverie. However, according to Chris Conley, the label, "...completely abandoned it three days after it was released, saying that we made the wrong record" (Skratch Magazine Issue 122). The album, though released by DreamWorks, still had the Vagrant Records logo on it, which was a result of their non-fulfilled contract with Vagrant. Fans were split by the drastic change in sound on In Reverie, (the record shifted more towards 60's inspired pop music), which probably contributed to the record's abandonment by DreamWorks. The label was sold a month later to Universal Music Group.

In June 2004, the band's former bassist RJ Smith passed away after a struggle with Red Bull poisoning.

In August 2004 Saves The Day released a b-sides and rarities album, entitled Ups & Downs: Early Recordings And B-Sides via Vagrant Records. This album was released in order to fulfill their remaining contractual agreements with Vagrant, and was also dedicated to Sean McGrath.

With DreamWorks disbanded and their contract with Vagrant completed, the band decided to build a home studio, named the Electric Ladybug, in a one car garage on Conley's property in Durham, California. The band started work on their next album.

On January 30, 2006, it was announced that Saves the Day had re-signed with former label Vagrant Records for the release of their self-funded project Sound the Alarm. The album was released on April 11, 2006, and Saves the Day began touring in fall 2006 with Emanuel, The Early November, and Senses Fail.

The band recently released a compilation of acoustic reinterpretations of their own material, titled Bug Sessions, Vol. 1, available only at the venues of their most recent tour. The album, was created "for the fans," with acoustic cuts of fan favorites, such as: Jodie (Can't Slow Down), Sell My Old Clothes, I'm Off to Heaven (Ups and Downs), You Vandal (Through Being Cool), and Freakish (Stay What You Are), among others.

The band was also featured on the soundtrack to the video gameTony Hawk's American Wasteland, performing a cover of the Dead Boys' song Sonic Reducer. Most recently, Saves the Day was featured on the soundtrack to the popular videogame Madden NFL 2007, performing Head for the Hills from the Sound the Alarm album.

Along with Senses Fail, Saves the Day played two sets on each date of the 2006 Warped Tour. The first included the full band and electric guitars. The second had Conley with an acoustic guitar, while the rest of the band played in the background. The acoustic set had no set list, with the songs instead being chosen by crowd request. Usually, the band ended the set with fan favorite Jessie and My Whetstone.

The band is now working on some new material, and is getting ready for another tour in spring '07 co-headlining with Say Anything.

The new material is an album named "Under the Boards" and is set to begin recording in late spring, possibly coming out in the fall.

On March 28th, 2007, Punknews.org has reported that Pete Parada has left Saves The Day. Parada, a veteran of bands including Face to Face, Jackson United, Alkaline Trio and Engine, had this to say:

"After four and a half years with Saves The Day, it saddens me to report that I have decided to leave the band. I wish them all the best of luck and look forward to starting fresh with a new band."

Pete is promising updates on his newly launched myspace page, where he states he is "Looking for a new band."

His now former band, Saves The Day, recently promised that their next full length, Under The Boards for Fall of this year.
