[edit] Introduction

Staro was created by Jessica Hatfield and Dieter Bratschi (Forestry Engineer of the Federal Institute of Technology FIT Zurich) as a non-profit organisation (registered charity number 1116002)to promote for the benefit of the public, the preservation and conservation of the Amazon rainforest; advance their education in the subject and to promote research into the flora and fauna of the Amazon Rainforest and to publish the useful results.

[edit] What they do

  • Work closely with the ICGA (a Brazillian environmental charity) in fostering the exploration of the rich Biodiversity and its Ethno-botanical value of the Amazon Rainforest.
  • Carry out sustainable agricultural projects with the local forest dwellers enabling them to live in harmony with nature.

STARO works in partnership with the Brazilian Instituto Caiua de Gestado Ambiental (ICGA) which is a not for profit conservation organisation based in Rio de Janeiro. With the cooperation of the Brazilian government, STARO and the ICGA have set up or are in the process of setting up a number of environmentally sustainable commercial projects intended to utilise the forest's natural products.

[edit] Objectives of the ICGA and STARO

  • Work with the Brazilian people to manage rainforest ecosystems in a sustainable way.
  • Provide economic alternatives for the local people, substantially reducing the damage caused by destructive agricultural practices.
  • Purchasing of the land enables these projects to take place.
  • Provide field study grants for students and researchers to make a detailed inventory of the area’s ecosystem and biodiversity.
  • This research identifies the needs of the forest dwellers and investigate solutions.
  • Prepare strategies and guidelines towards sustainable environmental management of the area
