Sausage sandwich
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A sausage sandwich is a sandwich made from bread (buttered or unbuttered) and sausages, usually with some form of sauce (commonly red or brown) and perhaps fried onions. It is rare in the UK to have any other toppings. The sausage sandwich is very common in Australia where the sausages are cooked on the barbeque outdoors, commonly cooked with onion. The common making of the sausage sandwich in Australia is to have the sausage placed on a piece of buttered bread, then coverd with onions and either tomato or Barbeque sauce then folded corners together, then eaten.
The sausage is cooked (fried or grilled) until the outside is browned and the inside is piping hot, this can be checked by cutting the sausage open and testing the temperature. There are some variations, one is to cut the sausages in half and fry for a few extra minutes, another is to dip the bread in the fat from the sausages as this gives the bread extra flavor. The finished sausage sandwich can be cut diagonally or vertically according to preference. A sausage butty is a UK slang term for a cooked sausage sandwich.
[edit] Major Ingredients
A sausage sandwich at its most basic level contains 2 ingredients.
The sausage used must be of the unspiced English pork variety. A sausage sandwich made with continental style smoked or spiced sausages would taste more like a Hot Dog and certainly wouldn't be recognised by English people as a 'sausage butty'.
[edit] Preparation
- Sausages are cooked either by shallow frying or grilling. This process can take between 10 and 20 minutes.
- In the final minutes of cooking, if toast is to be used, the toast is placed in the toaster, or under the grill if preferred.
- Just before the end of the sausage cooking time, the bread or toast may be buttered.
- The sausages are cooked and removed from the cooking device.
- The sausages may then be placed on the bread or toast. Often the sausages are sliced in half first, but not always.
- Additional ingredients are added, such as tomato ketchup or brown sauce.
- Bread / Toast is closed by placing one piece on top of the other.
- The sandwich is served, usually on a plate with a cup of tea.
