Sauromalus ater (Dumeril, 1856) |
Sauromalus ater is the Common Chuckwalla. It is also called Sauromalus obesus; although the name is no longer officially recognized, it is still very common in the literature and it remains in many standard natural history references for North America. The generic name comes from Greek, sauros = lizard and omalos = flat, referring to the body shape. The epithet ater, from Latin, means "black".
