Saul Deeney

Saul Deeney (born March 23, 1983 in Derry, Northern Ireland) is a professional football goalkeeper. He currently plays for Notts County and was signed by the Magpies on July 14, 2006. He is 6 ft 1 inches tall, and weighs 11 stone.

He fought his way through the ranks at County and had a loan spell at Hull City. But after no luck at Hull, he established himself as first-choice goalkeeper at County when Ian Richardson became player-manager at the club. Deeney, however, turned down a new contract at the end of the 2004-05 season, apparently due to its reduced terms.

Consequently, Saul joined Burton Albion of the Nationwide Conference in the autumn of 2005 and played 30 league games.

Deeney had one of the highlights of his career on January 8, 2006 during the FA Cup match between Burton Albion and Manchester United, keeping out two shots from Wayne Rooney as well as a dramatic save of a Ritchie Jones shot in injury time.

After leaving Burton in the summer of 2006, Saul re-signed for Notts County and will wear the number 23 shirt for the 2006-7 season.

Saul has also starred for the Republic of Ireland Youth team and under-21s. And rumours had it that Arsenal were after him in the summer of 2005.
