[edit] Saunders-Roe Princess

This is a Saunders-Roe publicity image of the Saunders-Roe Princess flying boat.

Use of this image in Wikipedia to illustrate an article on the Princess is contended to be Fair Use under United States law.

  1. Purpose and Character: the use is to illustrate a free encyclopedia and thus is educational and non-profit in nature.
  2. Nature of the work: Standard image of the aircraft, not an artistic illustration. This picture is merely a record of an object.
  3. Amount and substiantiality: whole of a single publicity shot but at low resolution, insufficient for print publication.
  4. Effect on work's value: Picture is a publicity still sent to the press at the time (1950s) intended for free publication. This picture was given away at no cost. The picture was intended purely for advertising the product pictured, which is no longer offered. Additionally, the company issuing the photograph is no longer in business. Thus, the commercial value of this picture to the copyright holder is nil.

Copyrighted

This is a copyrighted image that has been released by a company or organization to promote their work or product in the media, such as advertising material or a promotional photo in a press kit.

The copyright for it is most likely owned by the company who created the promotional item or the artist who produced the item in question; you must provide evidence of such ownership. Lack of such evidence is grounds for deletion.

It is believed that the use of low-resolution images of promotional material

  • to illustrate the work or product being discussed;
  • where the image is unrepeatable, i.e. a free image could not be created to replace it;
  • on the English-language Wikipedia, hosted on servers in the United States by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation,

qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law. Other uses of this image, on Wikipedia or elsewhere, may be copyright infringement. See Copyrights for more information.

To the uploader: please add a detailed fair use rationale for each use, as described on Wikipedia:Image description page, as well as the source of the work and copyright information.
