Rats in popular culture The rat in popular culture has been for a long time a metaphor and an archetype of an animal that is selfish and conniving. The rat is a popular figure in folklore and popular culture. The animal rat or the mythological figure has traits that commonly include selfishness, mischievousness, and evasiveness.
