[edit] Election

Dr. Satish Mohan, a professor at the State University at Buffalo (SUNY), and an entrepreneur is the present Supervisor of the town of Amherst. Previously, unknown in political circles, Dr. Mohan entered the Supervisors race first by engaging in a primary for the Republican nomination against the Amherst Republican Committee's endorsed candidate Dirk Rabenold, a member of the Board of Education. Mohan's campaign took out several full-page ads in the Buffalo News and local weekly newspapers, as well as an early and aggressive lawn-sign stategy. Mohan won in the Republican Primary and faced incumbent Democrat Supervisor Susan Grelick, as well as defeated Republican Dirk Rabenold (who remained the race as the Conservative and Independence Party candidate) in the General Election.

In one of the most expensive and visible local races in recent history, in which more than a half million dollars was spent by Mohan, he defeated Grelick and Rabenold by receiving 51% of the vote in the three way contest. Much of Mohan's success was credited to messages to voters that included a cut of the tax rate of 15%, a more equitable property assessment process, and solutions for residents dealing with sinking homes and cracking foundations.
