Satchel (bag)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A satchel is a bag used by many people to carry books, and other objects in. It has a one large strap that goes over one shoulder and across the body. Many students use them at universities and colleges. Many people claim it can affect the growth of the wearer, but this hasn't been proven. Like all bags, satchels are easily customised with patches and various other creative textiles.

[edit] The History of the Satchel

It is unknown when the satchel was first invented. It is believed that it was invented as a small purse or "carry-sack" for women in the Middle Ages. The satchel type of bag has existed for centuries and outdates the backpack that is common nowadays. Some people still think a satchel is a ladies bag, but it is generally considered to be more a unisex item.

[edit] In Popular Fiction

The most famous use of a satchel was in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy as used by Ford Prefect, which he uses to hold his towel and other odd items. Black satchels are often used in fiction, often in stories involving oppressive governments, to cover the victim's head. Such satchels have been used in Lost and V for Vendetta.
