Sarotherodon is a large genus of tilapiine cichlid fishes endemic to Africa inhabiting fresh, brackish, and salt water. The genus currently contains 19 species and subspecies. Members of this genus, as well as those of the genera Tilapia and Oreochromis, share the common name "tilapia". The type species of this genus is Sarotherodon melanotheron, an estuarine species from West Africa.
