Sarojini Naidu Medical College

Sarojini Naidu Medical College is one of the first three oldest medical colleges of India. During the region of British Empire, in 1854 S N Medical College was founded for the practice of British military doctors. The first name of S N Medical College was Thomson School, which is given by Lt. Governor Sir James Thomson, founder of the college. First planning of school is done by The East India Company, the maintenance cost was also borne by it. The hospital attached to the Medicinal School was known as the Thompson Hospital.
In 1957 the first batch of Indian doctors was passed out from Thomson School. Surgeon John Murray' (1854-58) was the first principal of school. From 1872 onwards, civilian students were also started being admitted to the L.M.P. Course, which was later changed into L.S.M.F. by the U.P. State Medical Faculty. In 1883 Lady Lyall Duuerin Hospital is founded as a separate section for the training of the female students in medical school and the first batch of female doctors was passed out in 1886.
In 1939 Agra Medical School was upgraded to full fledged Medical College for fulfill the growing demand doctors in United Provinces. The first batch of M.B.B.S. was passed out in 1944 from this school, the degree was awarded by Agra University. In 1947 the name of medical sechool is renamed as Sarojini Naidu Medical College after the name of first Lady Governess of Uttar Pradesh, poetess and freedom fighter, Bharat Kokila. At the same time the name of Thomson Hospital was also renamed as Sarojini Naidu Hospital. In 1948 the S N Medical College was recognized by the Medical Council and the General Medical Council of Great Britain. The first batch of postgraduate M.D./M.S. students passed out in 1948.
