The Sarissaphoroi (singular Sarissophoros) were the light cavalry of the Macedonian army. They recruited from Thracian, Paionian, and Illyrian tribes. They equipped with some light javelins, a sarissa, a leather covered wooden shield, and a cavalry sword. They wore leather armour, and Thracian helmet. Their name means sarissa bearers or pike bearers. They were good skirmishers and scouts.
