Chhapra is the headquarters of Saran district in the state of Bihar, in India.
It has a long history of Lord Ram's era. Here only, Ram had released Ahilya from her stone statue status due to the curse of her husband Gautam muni. Ramayan describes it as Ahilya-Uddhaar. That place is here named as Gautam sthan. Also, when lord Shiva carried the dead and burnt body of Parvati from the holy yagnakund of Daksh Prajapati, then the neck of Parvati's body fell here and the holy Shaktipeeth Ambika Sthan established here at Chapra. The place is known as Ambika sthan. Shivpuran has the details about the same. Mahadani King Mayurdvajh's palace's bhagnawashes is still here, under the monitoring of Archeological Survey of India, just on the bank of Ganga-Saryu sangam at Chirand area. In modern era. The first president of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad was of Chapra district. Shri jayprakash narayan, Majharul Haq, Mahapandit Rahul Sankrityayan, Pandit Ramavatar Sharma, Pandit kapil Dev Sharma, Bharat Mishra, all were of same soil of Chapra. This place had also given 6 chief ministers to Bihar State. So, still Chapra is a place to visit due to its many importance’s. The approach to the town is much easy through Train or Road. It is on the main route of transportation. The state capital Patna only 70 km. From here. At the present time chapra is very important place too. It is very important politically. Lalu prasad in M.P from here, one of the front leader of JD-U Prabhunath Singh belongs to this place .The main language here is bhojpuri .Impirtant educational institutions here are Rajendra college, Jagdam college and some small inter colleges. In schools, Zila School, Saran Academy, Rajput School, Brahmin School are high schools for boys whereas Govt. Girls' High School, Janak Yadav Girls High School, Arya Kanya Girls School et. are high schools for Girls. For primary education there are many government primary schools. Apart from these govt. schools there are many private schools like Braj Kishore Kinder Garten, V. D. Academy, Saran Academy etc. Therefore Chapra has a very good infrastructure for education. It is quite peaceful place as compare to its nearby places. Its main commercial places is Municipal chowk, this place is in the middle of town, therefore this is called heart of town. For marketing of cloths hathwa market is famous. Chapra give a lot of talented students who are serving all over the world on may reputed designations. In festivals, besides Holi, Diwali and Id, there is Chhath Parv in which Sun is worshiped. Chapra also has maharshi Dadhichi's asharam. (Dadhichi was a great tapasawi, he has donated his bones to make Lord Indra's vajra to help them in fighting with asurs). apart from Holi diwali & Id Makar Sankranti is also celebrated with lots of joy & zeal.
Chapra has also 4 major facotories situated at Marhowrah viz. Morton Mill (Birla Group), Sugar Mill, Saran Engineering (famous for Rolling Mills), and the Distiliary mill. But, due to improper management and policies these all are not functional right now. The government should look into the matter for make them functional. A newly opened Polytechnic college is also started at Marhowrah. :- Added by Sunil Kumar Singh (Sharda Rai Ke Tola, Narhar Pur, Marhaowrah, Saran, Bihar).
On August 11, 2006 Union Rail Minister Lalu Yadav announced setting up of locomotive manufacturing unit in the district.
It has been really long that i have been to my hometown marhowrah...hope the road which was under construction to join marhowrah and amnaur has been built. It would be a lot helpful for people to travel as the road condition was very bad. Morever the provision for electricity in the nearby villages of marhowrah needs to be looked on...Manoj Kumar Mishra,Roop rahimpur ,Marhowrah.
Although Chapra has given six Chief Minister to the state, but it is a backword in so many matters. The electricity condition is very bad better call it worse. The electricity department has divided the district in two parts viz fider 1 and fider 2 . fider 1 has always light whenever the supply is there because the power hose of the administration are in that zone. The west part of city and the villaged comes under fider 2, where darkness rules most of the time. Rather electricity comes in the late hours of night when most of public is sleeping. This unequal division of electricity is really very painful. When electricity is not there then can you think how the students studying there. Of course they study in the light of Kerosin lamp.
Now coming to the roads. Their condition is also worse. The internal roads connecting to the Mohallas are either water logged or concrete roads are badly damaged.Municipality department is either does not exist or it is always sleeping. The garbage can be seen on the main roads, forget about the lanes. There is one rode between Bharat Milap Chowck to Chatradhari Bazar, this rode is water logged through out 365 days of year. There is no body to take care of such things. There is no evidence of Municipality worker of carrying the trollies of garbage for the years. So you can easily find the small-small mauntains of garbage on the roads. The interconnecting roads to other part of state is also bad. The road between chapra and capital city Patna is also not an exception. Almost the 70 km stretch is made of pits. Specially the roads between Dighwara and chapra. It is a 27 km stretch, but it will take dam minimum 45 min of your time with any super sophisticated cars.
Coming to the education. There are so many schools/colleges, but only 2 colleges having PG level education in which one is for the sake of name. There is hardly 2or 3 subjects at PG level. There is lack of good quality Public schools. So there is always brain in drain. Moreover, there is no doubt about the talent pool in this city. Most of the students study outside the state or at least in the capital city, Patna. ....... Sateesh, Chapra.
