Sarah Jayne^{[citation needed]} Barnes is a fictional character in long-running Channel 4 English television soap opera Hollyoaks. She is played by actress Loui Batley.

Defying her mum Kathy’s wish for her to become an Olympic swimmer, Sarah is enjoying spending her time socialising and mixing with the opposite sex. Always looking for the next big adventure, she is avowedly inventive and spontaneous - but more than willing to fall under Nancy's less than charitable influence. A romance with best friend Hannah's older brother Rhys has resurfaced after a brief flirtation when they first met. Her mother is horrified at this and has vowed to stop Rhys from seeing her eldest daughter no matter what.

However, she found out about the fact that her Mum slept with Rhys and broke off the relationship. As revenge for her mother's behaviour Sarah deliberately failed her chance in her swimming trial, teaching her to stay out of her life. She then forgave Rhys, much to Kathy's annoyance on the promise the fling is never mentioned and that her father Mike never finds out. Sarah was persuaded by her boyfriend Rhys to have naked pictures of her taken on his phone. When she met Rhys in the SU Bar, she found out that the pictures of her had somehow spread. She later blamed Rhys for this and she dumped him. She became closer to Rhys's best friend Gilly Roach and later became her boyfriend.

At Kathy's birthday party, Gilly and Rhys had a heated argument about Sarah, which ended in Gilly letting slip that Rhys had slept with Kathy. Mike chucked Kathy out of the family home and was shocked to learn that Sarah had known about the fling for some time. She joined Mike in the Owens' former flat after walking out on her mum and younger sister Amy, who have since moved in with them.

Recently Sarah and best friend Hannah have struck up a friendship with Craig Dean and John-Paul McQueen. Sarah was dating Craig and with his help set Hannah up with John-Paul. Craig recently dumped Sarah when she was caught kissing Rhys at Hannah's 18th birthday party. After Sarah apologised Craig hastily reconnected with her.

Sarah delivered her niece Leah when Amy gave birth on the kitchen floor and has since then been trying to persuade Amy to care for her own baby instead of giving Leah to Kathy. Sarah has been trying to get through to Amy but can't seem to. She was comforted by Craig and then they got back together.

Sarah has become something of a fan favourite among cult Hollyoaks watchers. At first she was regarded as a bit of a one dimensional character, involved in storylines either featuring her swimming or being unable to keep a boyfriend, earning her the nickname Swimbint from UK Television website lowculture.^[1] Recent storylines however have made her a fan-favourite Hollyoaks character, and of the current cast she is one of the best loved female cast members after Louise Summers and Clare Cunningham.
