Santa MarĂa del Mar is a Gothic church in Barcelona. It is located at the Ribera quartier and was built between 1329 and 1383. The architects in charge were Berenger de Montagut (designer of the building) and Ramon Despuig.

[edit] History

The construction process started on the 25th March 1329, as indicated on the stones in the Moreres facade. The building belongs to the religious people, those responsible for the temple. During the construction all of the population from the Ribera quartier were involved actively. The walls, the lateral chapels and the facades were finished by 1350. In 1379 there was a fire that damaged important parts of the works. Finally, on the 3rd of November of 1383 the last stone was added and on the 15th August the first Mass was celebrated. In 1428 there was an earthquake that provoked several casualties and affected the rossasa (the main window in the main facade). The new window was finished by 1459 (flamigeous style) and one year later the crystals in the window were added. The images and the baroque style altar were destroyed in a fire in 1936.
