Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The film begins with a mailman in a road of snow as he stops and tells the kids the story of Santa Claus, in response to many kid's letters. The story begins in the small town of Sombertown, ran under Burgermister Misterburger, the mayor, and Grimsby, the Burgermister's sidekick. Grimsby brings in a baby labeled "Clause" on it. When Burgermister Misterburger refuses to watch over it, he commands Grimsby to take it out. As Grimsby carries it on a sleigh in the snowy wind, the string breaks, and the baby ends up in the hands of toy-making elves.
