Santa Catarina (Portuguese meaning Saint Catherine, Capeverdean Crioulo, ALUPEC or ALUPEK: Santa Katarina) is a municipality located in the northwestern and the western parts of the island of Santiago in Sotavento in southcentralCape Verde. The municipal and the parish population is around 49,829, the area is 243 km² and the density is about 205/km². The seat of the municipality is Assomada. The municipality was created in 1991. Santa Catarina is located about 60 km NNW of Cape Verde's capital Praia, SSE of Tarrafal and W of São Miguel.
Santa Catarina are linked with a highway linking Tarrafal and Praia via a mountain road that passes through Assomada and a road to Santa Cruz. Farmlands are situated within the valley areas, the mountains cover the rest of the municipality especially the Pico da Antônia, the Serra da Malagueta and the western parts. Grasslands and bushes covers the rest of the area with a couple of forests,, the forests are founded in higher elevations.
Its main economy are agriculture in which Santa Catarina is a rural characteristics and covers 86% of the total population, the main production includes hay farming, cattle production, poulty, fishing and retail commercials. The urban population exists almost entirely in Assomada and partially in Pico. The municipality is also known as the Celeiro de Cabo Verde or the Granary of Cape Verde and the market of Assomada is the most important in Cape Verde for where all the people of the island of Santiago create a confluence. A civil construction, a hostellery and a restoration of several new sectors in growth.
The municipality along with the countrysice has rare natural beauty and in localities with particular interests feature the Botanican Garden or the Jardim Botânico, the only botanical garden in Cape Verde, in clear contrasts with the town of Assomada is accented with urban growth. The Cultural Centre of Assomada lodges with a museum named Museu da Tabanka.

Santa Catarina includes the parish of Santa Catarina. The parish of São Salvador do Mundo before becoming a parish in 2005 was a municipality.
