Santa Baby

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Santa Baby" is a Christmas song written by Joan Javits (the niece of Jacob K. Javits), Philip Springer, and Tony Springer.

The song was originally sung and recorded in 1953 by Eartha Kitt. The song was a huge hit for Kitt, and she later said that it was one of her favorite songs to record.

The song is a tongue-in-cheek look at a Christmas list sung by a woman who wants the most extravagant gifts like sable, yachts and decorations from Tiffany's.

"Santa Baby" has been covered in recorded and live performances by many artists throughout the years, including Madonna, Everclear, RuPaul, Cynthia Basinet, Macy Gray, Natalie Merchant, Kylie Minogue and The Pussycat Dolls, as well as in an Ally McBeal episode by the title character (Calista Flockhart), and by Chris Mitchell. And recently, in 2006 Casathious Jones recorded the song for his latest album A Casathious Christmas, Vol. II.

The version recorded by Cynthia Basinet (performing as "c. basinet") in 1997 is often mistakenly credited as having been sung by Marilyn Monroe; in fact, Monroe never recorded the song.

The version recorded by the Pussycat Dolls was released as a B-side track on Stickwitu's vinyl and was rereleased on the PCD Special Edition version. The song entered the Top 70 Billboard charts in the Philippines, peaking at #22. Although it was never confirmed to be a Pussycat Doll single, the song has leaked into radio airplay in the Philippines. It is not known whether the song will be released elsewhere.
