Santa Bárbara de Goiás is a small town and municipality in eastern Goiás state, Brazil.

Santa Bárbara is located due west of Goiânia. Nearby towns are Trindade (40 km. to the east), and Nazário (17 km. to the west]. The regional center, Anicuns) is 25 km. to the northwest.

  • Highway connections: state highway BR-069 west from Goiânia, through Trindade, and then 40 kilometers west to Santa Bárbara de Goiás.

Neighboring municipalities: Avelinópolis, Nazário, Campestre de Goiás, and Guapó.

In January 2005 the Mayor was Moacil Moreira da Mata. There were 9 members on the city council and there were 3,965 eligible voters in April 2006.

In 2005 the population density was 40.25 inhab/km². In 2003 there were 4,456 people living in the urban area and 830 people living in the rural area. The population has increased by about 2,350 inhabitants since 1980.

The economy is based on services, public employment, cattle raising, and agriculture. In 2005 there were 17 industrial establishments--including two dairies--and 30 commercial establishments. There was one financial institution, a branch of the Itaú Bank. In 2004 there were 328 automobiles in the municipality.

In 2004 there were 18,850 head of cattle (5,860 milk cows), 11,880 head of poultry, and 1,930 head of swine. The main agricultural products were rice (5 kmª), bananas, beans, manioc, corn (15 kmª), soybeans, and tomatoes.

In 2003 there was 1 hospital with 17 beds and 5 ambulatorial health clinics. There were 6 doctors, 2 nurses, and 2 dentists in 2002. In 2000 the infant mortality rate was 23,42--below the national average of 33.0.

In 2005 the school system had 4 schools, 25 classrooms, 58 teachers, and 1,578 students. There were 259 students in a middle school. In 2000 the adult literacy rate was 85.5%--below the national average of 86.4%.
