Santa Ana is the second largest city in El Salvador, located 64 kilometers west of San Salvador, the capital city. Santa Ana has approximately 274,830 (2006) inhabitants and serves both as the capital of the department of Santa Ana and as the municipal seat for the surrounding municipality of the same name. For its administration the municipality divides in 35 corners and 318 small villages.

A major processing center for El Salvador's sizable coffee industry is located near Santa Ana.

Currently, the mayor of Santa Ana, Orlando Mena, is from the PDC or the Christina Democratic Party, the main right political party. Mena was reelected in the national elections of March 2003.

The city of Santa Ana has a pre-Columbian origin, whose founders were pocomames the name that they gave is not known him, when pipiles entered and conquered the zone in 1200 D.C, translated the original name of Santa Ana to nahuat, which serious: Sihuatehuacán, that means: “place of women priestesses”.

In 1894 happens revolution of the 44 that overthrows to the president Carlos Ezeta, that governed the country like dictator from the present quarter of the second brigade of infantry of Santa Ana.

At the time of gold of the coffee in El Salvador, Santa Ana was the most prosperous city of the country. This because many of the industralists who cultivated it lived in Santa Ana, in addition were important plants beneficiaries who prepared the coffee for their sale

Santa Ana is now the second city in importance in El Salvador, the main economic activities of the municipality are the restaurants and the sales of meals. In the North zone and the west of the city are factories and you assemble and in the South zone is the area of more commercial development in which they are located most of restaurants, commercial banks, hotels and centers. The greater commercial center of the city is metrocentro, which has taken the commercial development to the South periphery of the city; nevertheless, the historical center continues being a powerful motor in the economic development of the city.

Santa Ana has two main markets: the Market Columbus and the Central Market, distanced one of another one by a few streets, and in which the visitor can find the greater variety of products

With respect to tourism the city counts on old architectonic jewels of the city like: Catedral de Santa Ana (Santa Ana's Cathedral), Alcaldía Municipal de Santa Ana (Santa Ana's City Hall) and the Teatro de Santa Ana (Santa Ana's Theatre).

The only museum of the city registered by Concultura is museo of the West. Also, one is to the East of the city, the Turicenter Sihuatehuacán, administered by the Salvadoran Institute of Tourism, which is one of but traditional tourist destinies of the country and to the south of the city is Aquatic Park the Parks.

Like the one of the rest of the country, the population practices in its majority the catholicism, being the host city of the Diocese of Santa Ana, who occupies the departments of Santa Ana and Ahuachapan. They emphasize between its important churches but, la Cathedral of Santa Ana, place where is the image of the pattern of the city; the church the Calvario, destroyed partially by the earthquake of the 13 of January of 2001, and at the moment in reconstruction; the church the Cármen; the parish Mother of El Salvador; working the San jOse church; and others.

Also, several protestant churches exist, that have seen increased their affluence of believers and they already comprise important of the popular faith.
