The Gruppo Sanpaolo IMI is one of Italy's major banking and insurance groups and it is based in Turin. It employs about 44 000 people and it has about 7 millions of customers.

It has about 3200 local offices where private, business and retail banking activities take place. It also cares about savings and retirement funds.

Its main shareholders are the Compagnia di San Paolo and the Banco Santander Central Hispano.

On August 24, 2006 a merging project with Banca Intesa was announced. If the operation were successful the main italian bank would be created, and it would be one of the biggest ones in the area of the Euro.
