Sandhills Community College

Sandhills Community College is a community college located in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Sandhills was chartered in 1963, and officially opened October 1, 1965, as the first community college in North Carolina offering a degree for transfer to a four-year school. It is part of the 59-campus North Carolina Community College System.

Over 10,000 students enroll in Sandhills' continuing education program annually, while college credit enrollment accounts for almost 4,000 students a year. The Fall, 2003, semester saw a 12% increase in student body compared to Fall, 2002.

Sandhills Community College moved to its present location from Southern Pines in March, 1966. Thanks to a generous donation by Mary Luman Meyer, the campus consists of 240 acres (1 km²) and comprises eight instructional buildings, a student center, visitor’s center for the Sandhills Horticultural Gardens, maintenance facility, auditorium, and Boyd Library, which contains more than 72,000 volumes and 700 periodical subscriptions.
In addition to the main campus, campuses located in Robbins and Hoke County provide continuing education and basic job skills courses to the unemployed and under-employed.
In the fall of 2003, construction began on the two-story, 45,027 square feet (4180 m²) Dempsey Student Center.

For the 2001-2002 year, Sandhills employed 247 full-time personnel and had a student-faculty ratio of 18:1.
